i'm currently looking at the apple 20" display. are there options of the same quality for a better price? or should I go with the apple? also, if i can get the older, plastic version, for a better price, should I?

thanks in advance for your responses.

i like dell, personally. great quality, more ports, much cheaper...

apple displays are a ripoff. if you have a bunch of money to spend, then great, pay extra to have it match your pro line computer perfectly. other than that though, it's not worth it IMHO.

I don't think the 20" ACD is priced competively. I don't think I would get it if i was looking in that range.

The Dell is a better value when looking at 20" Displays.

Dells 20 inch displays usually are on sale I seen them on their site for $380 yesterday and they contain more ports for added uses. Unless your a super Apple fanatic, buy the dell.

At the 20 inch range, the Dell is definitely the better choice based on the huge price difference.

If you were in the 23 or especially the 30 inch range, I would suggest an Apple, but the Steve Jobs tax on the 20 inch monitor is just too high to justify.

the Dell 2407 24" HD has same resolution as Apple 23" and currently is on sale for something ridiculously cheap as $700.

I am absolutely in love with mine.

Not only that, it actually has inputs, which the Apple display lacks entirely.

I think it all depends on your need. I understand the Dell's are great for general use, but if you are in need of a color accurate monitor, Dell is probably not the way to go. Check out the forums at Luminous Landscape for some good tips on color accurate monitors. People over there seem to like Apple, Sony and NEC.

Well people like that also spend a lot of money on hardware calibration tools, as well.

For the general user (and gamer) a Dell is far above their needs. But even with color accuracy, I will still never understand why apple neglected to include ANY other inputs. I mean clearly a vast majority of Mac users are NOT Mac gamers, since we've all played those games on PC when they first came out--3 years ago. Why not support XB360, etc?

Yeah. It even pulls out of the Reality-Distortion-Field.

Even at 24'', though, the Dell has the advantage IMO, especially if their displays really are 8-bit and not 6-bit as I thought. From what I gather, the Apple has a better, more even backlighting, but for general use, it's almost definitely not worth paying the premium for.

Yeah, like a built-in FireWire hub. Good thing Dell has you covered there.

Good thing FW400 is being phased out in favor of 2.0!

(Don't think I agree with the movement towards that, it's simply my cognizance of that fact)

Also in repsonse to the sarcastic reply I received about inputs, I meant video inputs. You know, like component. S-video. Composite.

But hey, it's cool to not have any of that stuff. Less is more, right?
