what do i think of Parallels?

before trying it out i was a little "iffy" about it. not so sure if it is worth the 80 bucks and etc. since bootcamp is still a beta and i have a few programs i need to run on my macbook but it is PC only. i decided to give parallel a try and guess what? it is extremely user friendly, any newbie should be able to do it (with somewhat computer knowledge of course).

i like the idea of bootcamp by just running 1 OS at once but you can always stop the virtual machine in parallel...if needed

just thought i'd share my 2 cents about parallel...

Have you got the latest beta? , it is a huge improvement and very stable, I strongly reccomend it. It's speed improvements, USB2, and Coherence mode are amazing...

The next version should have multicore support which will run about 50% faster on a dual core machine hopefully. The main advantage of bootcamp is 3D power...parallels sucks with 3D games etc.

Another feature of the latest beta I forgot to mention, is that you can resize the window like any normal application, and windows will shrink automatically, which is extremely useful.

100% USB2 support would be nice, but they're close.

It is an awesome peice of software, and I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy the latest build when you can get it.

With the lates build you get drag and drop support, its that easy. Drag something from your mac onto windows' desktop and voila!

ADDITION: They have also made installation much simpler, so if you ever want to install windows again or another OS then it will be easier...

AND, they have CD and DVD drive support...

I found Vista to suck on Parallels big time, but XP was a delight. Even a beta or two ago, it was stable, fast and user friendly. Unless gaming, Boot Camp just wastes time rebooting. Being able to use Windows like an app window is so much better.

i cant believe i wasted so much time trying out bootcamp....1 week ago and it even killed my macbook....well..not really but the logic board died out on me...and it cost 1000 bucks to replace at the apple store...but of course i had warranty....so it was no biggie and they got it done within a day...

Re the latest Parallels update - I've just downloaded a 30mB dmg after running the software update check. If I install this, will I have to re-install Win XP again, along with my apps, or will the new version pick up my original Win XP installation?

You can use your own Xp installation...

You may have to select it, or even find it with, but it is a .pvs file, probably the only one you'll find with spotlight.

I'd just like to add. I spoke briefly to one of the Parallels exhibitors at MacWorld, and he said they have three priorities. In order of priority - USB2.0 support, 3D graphics acceleration, Linux tools.

It has been stated that multi-core support is a priority, as it is one of only a few advantages of VMWare's Fusion competitor...
