I'm a former Treo geek, and the iPhone has won me over. AT&T/GSM, however, has not... and I'm just ambivalent about the little email software limitations (I am no crackberry addict, plus it'll be solved soon enough I'm sure).

It is really interesting how every Treo website and forum member seems to feel a need to reassert themselves that their Treos are so much better than the "mediocre" iPhone and all of its hype. :) Of course, every review is biased as hell.

The Treo users reviewing iPhones are a lot like the neighborhood 4-year-old kid who brags about how much better his bigwheel is than your Mercedes convertible. ;) Makes 'em feel better.

Its funny, they all sound jealous under the skin.
My wifes treo is hands down the clumsiest smart phone ive laid my fingers on. She is going to switch to the iPhone as soon as her contract runs out in October.

Most of the people I know who were desperate for a new iPhone were, in fact, Treo users. In fact, on the line at the Apple store prior to the iPhone's release I was surrounded by Treo users. It seems a disproportionate number of Treo users ditched their devices to upgrade to an iPhone.

I suspect, much like this forum, it is the hardcore and devoted Treo users that are maligning the iPhone.

That's not to say that the Treo is a bad phone. But it's probably the case that many were using it because it was the only game in town that approached what they were looking in a phone, a need that Apple addressed in the iPhone. So it isn't surprising that Treo users in particular would be drawn to the iPhone- The Treo was the closest that they could get to their ideal vision of a phone until the iPhone came along.

I'm actually semi-surprised that an iPhone like device didn't come along sooner, given the lead that Palm, Symbian, and Microsoft have had in this space. I'm a former Clie NR-70 user and it seemed so obvious back then that the way that device should evolve was to add phone capabilities and a mini-HD to it. My first handheld was a 1st gen US Robotics Pilot and even then it felt inevitable that the device needed to merge with a cellphone. It seems that the industry got derailed somewhere after the Handspring phone module and the early Treo's.

In any case, those Treo users who are incapable of adapting to a touch screen keyboard, need laptop tethering, require a proven e-mail push system, and don't mind the tiny, lo-res screen, limited media capabilities, disabled internet browsing, and low storage are not going to migrate to the iPhone. Should they be bitter about it? Well maybe, but not at iPhone users. They should be angry at Palm for having it blown it given their massive lead.

I listend to the TreoCast last night and listened to two guys from treocentral talk about it.

One guy has moved onto the iphone and started phonedifferent.com but the other was just laughable.

I wish I took notes but the other guy spent 5 minutes parsing that the iphone is not a smart phone because of lack of thrid party apps. Guess he will change his mind in oct when rumors of them are to be released.

But comment after comment was laughable. I was laughing out loud as you could just hear the untone of jelousy and inferiority was acompanied with their comments.

palms current tailspin is GOOD because they are now smaller and nimbler.

Sorry unless they have steve Jobs is on their team they are deluding themselves.

etc..

Best one?

Ok you know how the current palm OS is vers. 4(?) well palm then gave up on vers. 5 (and sold it off) WELL NOW they say vers 6 (linux based that might be here in 2008) is going to be "it"...

yah sure..

but it gets funnier.. they said the iphone "would have been" version 6 or 7 of the palm OS. basically they were saying that if palm were in such deep doo doo spinning their wheels all these years the iphone is what they would have shipped (as far as ease of use and interface) before apple.

Muuahhhahhaha...

Then they got into watching videos and music etc on the palm and all I kept thinking was "one click buy pirates of the caribean. Sync. Then watch. EASY.)

(oh and they other guy thought Foleo was a great product which basically tells you everything you need to know)

I understand when you have years invested into a product ones first reaction is to defend it but... come on... palm OS... if you need certain 3 party apps or if you REALLY want a keyboard then MAYBE.)

But most are better suited for an iphone.

Night Night Palm...

I'm a Treo convert to an i-no-phone

The iphone is so much better than the Treo 700 that I had. It is amazing. The problem is that AT&T has horrible service in New Mexico, so essentially, I have no phone! I'm not ready to give up yet. I am calling AT&T every time I find a dead zone. I also have a local map where I circle dead zones and will deliver it to the AT&T Store daily until they realize that they must provide phone service when they sell a phone service contract.

Fanatics? Apple has even worse fanatics.

Its like asking what's oil think about water?

Previously was using a treo 650 for 2 years. Great phone, but towards the end of its life was continuously resetting. I never tried a full reset, as I didn't want to lose some of the apps I had.

Thought I would miss the keyboard, I don't. Only things I do miss is the ability to easily store data (pdfs, word files, excel) and the card reader. Besides that I love the phone. Things I hated about the the treo was that it couldn't run two programs at once, ie if you had internet loading, then wanted to play a song, you had to quit internet and go to the player, it wouldn't load in the background.

Edge is def. faster on the iphone. Screen is better. Battery life is worse, but I am using it more (as an ipod vs. a phone/email machine). No biggie, just have to charge it when I sleep at night.

Glad I switched, was going towards a 750, then I ended up getting an iphone on release day and am quite pleased.

When it comes to Treo/Blackberry people, I expect the iPhone to be 2-3 software updates away from impressing a high majority of them.

Along with future apps, I think all will be well soon enough for that catagory of cell-phone users

That 2nd post said the iPod has gone up in price...thats funny!

And someone said the Newton is a Palm Pilot wannbe....someone needs to give these people a history lesson!

But its a Treo based site, so I'm not suprised

This is a very fitting topic, since the Treo was 5 years ahead of the competition when it was announced in 2001. Now, there's many Treo-like devices from every manufacturer, but it took many years to get there.

As a former Treo user since day 1, while the iPhone offer less features than the treo, the mobile Mac OS X is far more robust and the features that are included work 100% correct.

But the treo does a few important tasks better than the iPhone. Calling any contact out of a 1000 on the Treo takes 3 seconds to dial by simply typing the person's initials. Scrolling for that name on the iPhone is slightly silly and dizzy, but fun.

Also, iPhone email can't deal with more than one message at a time. Somehow I downloaded 100 emails on the iPhone, and had no easy way to mark them read or delete them all immediately. It was ridiculous to wipe and tap each one. The Treo offers numerous ways to handle many or all emails at once, though the Palm OS is so kludged that waiting for the device to finish the task takes a minute to finish.

The Palm third-party applications are outdated and cause problems, and the Palm OS is basically untouched in many years. The lack of multi-tasking is a tremendous headache.

For some odd reason, being a Treo keyboard aficionado has created havoc with the iPhone. Maybe it was some bad habits, holding the Treo at odd angles and doing the keys with the sides of my thumbs, but now moving to the iPhone I sometimes can not hit the correct keys to save my life. Maybe it's an angle thing that causes an optical illusion, but it does seem that users with no previous thumb-board experience may do better with the iPhone.

Clearly, the iPhone is a completely new interface and it requires some dedicated time to become familiar with it. But it's done right, and Apple knows OS and hardware better than anyone right now.

Are you serious? Your contacts on your Treo are already on your Mac (Address Book) or PC (Outlook Contacts). You get your iPhone, and it syncs with the same list of people...

I think its pretty accepted to say the iPhone doesn't do nearly as much as the Treo. Most Treo users you find online cannot live with that, considering the cost of the phone. I don't blame them (they shouldn't get the phone if thats the case), but I find that most of whats missing is stuff I don't need (mms, a2dp, utility apps, etc).

So reviews are mixed, depending how much Treo users actually USED their Treo's... 700P converts seem to love it, because pre-MR that phone was an instable piece of trash for most of them.

My only gripe right now is slingbox. I know EDGE can't really handle the bandwidth, but I still would like the option when I have wifi or in an emergency.

most of the people on the Treo forums have only used Treos.. A person who has had both the treo and the iPhone is much more qualified to make a comparison..

I had a Treo 650, still do, and I liked it- when it worked.. It is an extremely unstable piece of equipment, that's why I switched to a BlackBerry before getting the iPhone.. It (the Treo)does very many things, unfortunately none of them very well.. So far, IMHO, I find the iPhone to be a much better device- sure it's not as versatile as the Treo, but IMO that versatility is what ends up being the Treo's downfall- it's like a part time job trying to keep that thing up and running.. The iPhone provides a much better user experience.. I can't see me ever switching back to either the Treo or the BlackBerry.. The iPhone is not perfect, but to me it just feels "right"..After using all 3 I think I'll stick with the iPhone..

Why use Slingbox when you can download the videos from iTunes?

Never could get it to sync with my macbook, so I always kept my contacts up to date separately with my treo and macbook. Didn't want to shell out 40 for the missing sync when it just took a minute to do.

So I just synced it as normal.

As a former Sprint Treo 650 user, I will say that the iPhone is way way way easier to use. Could I go back to one? Probably not.

I will admit, the Treo forums are just as hostile as Macrumors is at times. ;)

Oh yeah, forgot to add, syncing on the mac with the treo was horrible... The iPhone is my savior!!!!!! Please note that most Treo users are not Mac users, so they may never understand our plight!!!

I was a Treo 650 user for two years using Sprint. I mainly wanted the Treo for the touch screen/stylus functions. Functions that I used most were the calander, alarm, Internet, camera. I gotta admit that when I first got it, I was excited about it's ability to also play movies and MP3s.

When I got the phone, within a week I purchased a 1GB SD card and loaded it with MP3s and took it to work with me. Was I ever dissapointed in the way the built in MP3 player worked, so much that I never used it as an MP3 player after that first time. I hated that the phone would lock after so long and the only buttons that would work with it locked were the volume controls. There was no way to pause a song if someone came up to talk to me without unlocking the phone first. It did allow playlist creation.

The iPhone does allow us to pause the music by pressing the button on the headphones and it also allows the volume to be changed by using the buttons on the side, all without unlocking the display.

My iPhone also took all my contacts from Outlook that had automatically been synced the last time I used the hotsync on the Treo. It also loaded up my email address. The only change I had to make was to remove the password from the outgoing because it's not needed and caused the email sending to fail on the phone.

All in all, the functions that I bought the Treo for, I have in the iPhone and the iPhone does them much better with a much more colorful screen and a bigger screen at that. I really don't miss the Treo.

I don't think that is just AT&T, I've had experience with myself and friends and family having no service in NM.

It's a big state, they probably have more coverage in NM than in whole areas of the east coast.

lol no the iphone only syncs BASIC fields, (very basic fields) on a Treo or any WM phone you can sync these fields since pocket outlook is way more powerful than the iphone.

Treo >> iPhone = Step down

(yeah i know its a little truncated but there is more than 120 fields)
