what do use in place of iDisk

Recently heard that iDisk is going???

what do use in place of iDisk??

I save to various emails now on various services, but I like iDisk.
Was always there for me on my iPhone... never looked to see if it's on my iPad??

Thoughts???

Dropbox. Easy to setup and they have a free sync client for OS X and an iOS app also.

Box.net has similar service but they charge for the desktop sync app.

I think you will find most forum members are using Dropbox.
 
DB vs SS

I have tried both. Would caution you about a SS behavior.

All files that are uploaded to SS and able to be displayed as images are AUTOMATICALLY placed by SS as images in a Photo Album. In my case it was PDF files. I had numerous PDF files that SS converted into imaages without my awareness. The PDF images contained sensitive personal informaton such as my DL, Birth Cert, Mil ID, Bank Accounts, SS card, Credit Reports, Mortgage, Tax Returns, Insurance, etc.

I had a computer crash, lost the folder on my computer, went online to download to a USB drive attached to a new computer, then deleted the online files with plans to start a fresh folder sync. At this point the images (photos) of these PDF files were orphaned and could only be deleted with Tech Support intervention. It took a few emails back and forth but Tech Support came through and the files were deleted.

I will not be using SS in the future for File or Document syncing or backup as I do not want to risk my personal text information to be viewable as images in SS Albums and I have no ability to disable this feature because it is Expected Behavior.


I am back to syncing with DB.
 
I've moved to Dropbox ever since I found out that iDisk was going.

Dropbox's free account seems to do everything that is necessary. In the event you ever need more than 5GB, just pay them for more.

MacBook, iMac, iPad 2, iPhone 4S, they all work perfectly well with Dropbox.

If anybody at Apple is listening, however, I'd prefer to have an iDisk hosted at Apple, even if I had to pay for it! :)
 
I also have used Dropbox for several years.

In fact, though I have had iDisk available to me for years, I never really used it. I used iDisk about a month and wasn't pleased with it. I went looking for something better and found Dropbox. I never looked back.

For my needs Dropbox is far superior.

Yes, me too. I left feedback at Apple. Don't think they are listening, it's not a money maker for them. Gallery going away is most painful but I just discovered Smug Mug, a paid service. Finally, something that is more than worth paying for!
 
To me, Dropbox and Sugar Sync aren't replacements for iDisk. They're convenient, and I use both for different purposes, but they don't replace the main feature of iDisk that I'm after which is NOT storing files on my computer, but still having access to them at any time.

Sure I could go to the DB or SS site and download my files that I want to use, but that becomes more of a hassle than it is worth, and for the price of the upgrades I'd be better off getting a hosting plan with GoDaddy and doing the same thing. iDisk functioned as if it were an external hard drive that was connected to all your systems all the time. Dropbox and Sugar Sync still require using storage on your computer which is the main killer for me with only 128GB to work with in the system.

Isn't it possible to choose whether or not SS stores files on your computer, or whether it just keeps them in the cloud so you can access (and edit) them online? I found the following info here:

There are a couple ways you can manage synced folders with SugarSync. First off, SugarSync automatically creates a Magic Briefcase in your My Documents folder when you install the client. This syncs automatically across the web and locally on each synced machine with SugarSync installed. In this way, the Magic Briefcase is pretty much exactly the same as your main Dropbox folder would be—except with a name I really can’t take seriously (pull a rabbit out of it, and I’ll be a believer).

Now, when you add a folder from your computer to SugarSync, by default, your Synced Folder is accessible from other computers and your personal website (located at yourusername.sugarsync.com), but it won’t automatically create local copies on each machine (like the Magic Briefcase does).

So, to review, there are three kinds of folders with SugarSync:

  • Magic Briefcase – Acts like a Dropbox folder. Files are synced in the cloud and across all computers.
  • Synced Folders – Doesn’t sync across all computers, but can be accessed via the web interface or the SugarSync file manager and is backed up to the cloud.
  • Web Archive – Cloud backup only—isn’t synced locally, but can be accessed via the web interface or SugarSync file manger.

You know...if they'd just add the functionality of being able to create folders on iCloud, that'd go a long way toward satisfying everybody.

Is there a way to create folders on iCloud and I've been missing it?

I've noticed when checking my iCloud account that my old MobileME plan has been added back as if it's possible to renew it...and I can't help wondering if they're coming on board with providing us better functionality.

Whatever they're doing, I wish they'd get the lead out. :)

Add me to the Dropbox list. It works pretty much like iDisk for me as cloud storage. I can access it from the Open/Save dialogue and have a folder on my Desktop for quick drag-and-drop.

I know Mountain Lion is supposed to be bringing some changes to iCloud, but until I can use it seamlessly with all my apps, it's not much more than a cool trick my Macs do.
 
Dropbox but it bothers me that I'm not able to rename files. I hope that they add this feature a.s.a.p.

I was also hoping that Apple keep the iDisk for iCloud. We will see in which direction Apple will go but I'm sure that Apple will come with a very similar solution like Drobpox (-> perhaps with iOS 6 in combination with Mountain Lion)

i LOVE Smugmug. I gladly pay the yearly fee, which really isn't that much - unlimited RAW image storage, awesome

Regarding sandimacd's post, Apple really cheeses me off at times. They bring in services thats only a few years old then ditches them. That's extremely lame. iCloud is starting to feel less and less for what it's worth but I still need the service for the email. As that would be an endless job going through everything changing emails with companies/friends etc
 
Drop box is frikking amazing - everything idisk should have been!!!

Surprised Apple never snapped it up with an obscene bid as it really is snappy and perfect for me!
 
DropBox has really become something i can't live without on my Air, it just works so much better than iDisk ever did. I can upload from my phone and its there straight away on my laptop absolutely love it. And the public link thing works brilliant as well.
 
iDisk has always been a piece of ****** in my opinion. I have found it buggy, quirky, slow. There is a good reason why Steve Jobs wanted to buy DropBox because the developers at this company were able to create a simple and reliable cloud based storage system that the apple developers unfortunately were not able to pull off.

I have used both iDisk and DropBox for a few years now and I feel DropBox is just a much better product/service.
 
I just started using Dropbox myself. I'm really impressed, and many iPad/iPhone apps offer Dropbox support, which makes it better than iDisk IMHO.
