What do you do when you first get it?

Beside hugging your MacBook Pro, what should you do when you finally get it for the first time?

I mean, hardware test, calibration, must have software, etc... anything required to get up to speed in a fast and secure way. Please help a newbie waiting for its laptop.

i do it to customized the install, i don't need chinnesse or Punjabi translation hehehehe, removing all the unwanted install stuff can save you at least 800mb-1gig

I am about to be a Windows switcher. Reinstalling Windows is a pain. How do I do this for OS X? I may be making my purchase this weekend so I want to be ready. Thanks.

Or just run monolingual - removes all the languages you don't need in about 5 minutes, instead of spending an hour formatting and reinstalling.

that's exactly what i did and my glad i did it. it leaves you far more time to play with your new macbook pro than formatting, reinstalling, etc.
do yourself a favor and go get Onyx and Monolingual.
btw, im also a switcher, newbie, whatever how you want to call it so i was in the same situation as you. Only i got mine !!

yea, i know there is software for that, but i prefer not to even install it, "old habits die hard" some mac technician back in the day, when i bought my mac quadra, told me it was good to do it, but im not sure exactly why

well reinstalling the mac os would not take you more than 30-45 min.

just insert the Mac os CD in the computer, start the computer from the cd by either selecting the cd on start up volume, or restart pressing + C

and then select erase and install, and theres a button that says customize, and you hit that and it would take you the install window where you can remove everything that you don't want to install

Thanks. So basically the same idea as reinstall of windows. Have the disk in the drive and restart the machine.

exactly but gotta remember to select the disk as the start up volume in the system preferences, o restart the computer pressing +c otherwise it will not start up from the cd

If "langs" is short for languages, then you're likely thinking of Monolingual. However, Intel Mac owners use with caution as you can easily remove architectures that are necessary for Rosetta to run.

Instead, if it's a brand new machine, and you're itching to remove languages and cut down on the bloat of the fresh-outta-the-box OS, I'd do an "Erase & Install." There you can safely remove unnecessary printer drivers, languages, and even apps.

I don't think monolingual(?) or debabelizer have good reputations on the intel macs.
