What did you do, or do you do with your "old" computer, when you buy a new one?

I'm busy with my first :p my previous one, that was very "young", went to my grandfather and i got a new one, but that doesn't really count.

I guess i would keep it, for other tasks or as design because apple computers are quite an art.

When I bought my new MBP, I gave my old powerbook pismo to my grandma, who had never had a computer before. She has gone crazy with it, and loves it.

For christmas this year, I bought her a new white macbook. I can't wait to give it to her! :)

I sell to finance the new one. I always seem to have both a laptop and desktop though, both come in handy.

She'll probably be very happy with it..

How much percent approximately of your profit of the old one, can finance the new one?

Hm..not too sure about percentage, but I normally manage to sell the old for £350-£400. Bearing in mind they're rather out of date by the time I do upgrade.

Usually I'd give it to a family member if they 'needed' it.

Otherwise, my favorite thing to do is turn them into FTP/Web servers.

Having your own remote storage is very useful.

You didn't have these options:

For Apple Stuff: carefully put it back in the original box and all the stuff it came with to be added to my collection. :D

For PC's: give to the local PC recycler/disposal company...

For the last 5 years, I have traded in my old computers towards reducing the cost of a new one. PowerMax has been very good with trade ins.

it largely depends. i gave my ibook g3 away to my sister, but i kept my ibook g4 when i got my g5. recently, i've sold my computers to upgrade to the next model, so i'm currently a one-machine guy.

i haven been through so many computers in past year. yesterday I suddenly found my first laptop (compaq n610C) still runs beautifully (except the DVD-rom can only be used as CD rom now, and battery only holds 18% of its max capacity) with PCLinuxOS.

We always keep it, in our loft we have a Pentium 233mhz machine and enough spairs from my old PC to actually build, another PC :p

Once this thing (iMac) becomes a product of yesteryear I plan on putting in a 4ghz C2Q and adding on new fans to compensate for the heat. should give it a bit of extra life :p

My mom's getting my old 12" Powerbook this Christmas (not FOR Christmas, but I'm giving it to her when I go visit her at Christmas).

I keep it, telling myself I'm going to use it as a server or something. Then it ends up unused, usually in a closet.

However, in the past, I've sold an old Mac (6100) and given one (SE, my very first) to a family member.

I've bought 3 Gateways this year, and I've given them all to family members. They pay my tuition, so it's the least I can do. I'm going to sell my iBook though, because everyone in my family already has a computer, and the money I use toward it will help pay end of term bills. My MB's coming tomorrow.

I've always just thrown my PCs away, but I'll keep my Mac for a very long time before possibly selling it or recycling it.

I have 2 6 year old iMac G3s. Unfortunately one of them lost it's power supply... but the other one lives on, and keeps it's friend's memory alive. Perhaps one day iMac2 will be resurrected... but until that day comes, it will keep it's place here in the house only as a memory.... and as an iMac that won't power on, but still looks nice.

I WON'T GIVE UP ON YOU IMAC2! I won't.... never....

We lost great comrades along the way... Let us bow our heads and remember them...
Mac SE1, Mac SE2, LCIII, PowerMac 6100AV.

But we've gained new ones. Like MacBook Pro15 and MacBook Pro17.

Ahem... yes, well... moving on.

At some point in the future, I plan to combine all of my old Macs into what I like to call a "SuperMac". What is this, you ask? Why, each Mac will perform a task for the whole. They will also learn to take care of each other and one day learn to build themselves a vessel in which they can live together and go forth into the world as a new life form.

That... that is what I do with my old Macs.

I would either give it away for free or for a small price. People tend to respect things better when they have to pay for it. If I were to sell my G5 Tower when the Mac Pro becomes available i would let it go for $500 or so, even with the 250GB HDD and extra RAM. It's kinda outdated beyond charging $1000 for it.

There are plenty of college students out there that are hungrier than most professionals, and putting a machine of any respectable power in their hands would give them the ability to do great things, or so it seems.

That's still quite a nice price. How old approximately is your computer you're selling?

I personally like that one :p
My Power Mac G3 makes a great night stand. It is also now being used as a music server.
intresting, do you then also let it stream music wireless to speakers? or maybe an apple tv?

My old computers always go to my parents. As they don't understand much about tech they are always delighted by the upgrade as I was several years earlier. They "switched" just under a year ago when my old old sony laptop was replaced by my old iMac and they absolutely love it. I like it that my old machines get so much use rather than sitting in a cupboard. They're getting leopard for christmas :)

I keep 'em.

My old iBook G4 is my backup machine in case something horrible should happen to my MacBook (again), it was very good to have when the HD dies</understatement>.

Our two old, non-functioning Pismos are in a closet downstairs, still waiting for me to have time to make one working Pismo from the parts of both (which should be doable, since it's different things that seems to have gone wrong with them).

All our older Macs, which all are in working order, a Power Mac 7500, Performa 630 and Performa 425 are also tucked away downstairs... I have a vague dream of making setting them up with OS 9, OS 8 and System 7, respectively, just for fun. But for now they're collecting dust...
