Do you just delete them? keep them till you run out of hard drive space and then delete them or purchase more storage? Or burn them to disc perhaps?

I ask mainly as im looking into finding a cost effective and reliable way to "archive" old video files long term (mainly just old divx files) just looking for inspiration really! Cheers

I use network storage for my media that I upgrade over time, as needed. But that's primarily commercial purchases (music and movies) and family photos. However, I do have alot of family movies archived on DVD.

I guess it comes down to what's "old" mean? If you've got stuff you'll never use again, delete it. If its got sentimental value but you want to archive it, storing on DVD would be a space and cost efficient solution.

My Floppy Room is 4x3 m. All filled. Go figure.

No but seriously: External HHDs aren't that expensive these days. Buy some TB and you'll be fine. Having a dedicate disk instead of lots of dvds makes a lot more sense IMO.

Depends on what you mean by "old" video files.

If I have a better copy of the old file, naturally I delete it. If it's just a video that I don't use/watch/need all that often, but think I will in the future, I usually put it on my external HDD. Like mentioned already, external drives are fairly cheap and pretty reliable, in my experience. If they're just videos that I know I'll never want to watch/use again, I'll trash them.

Thanks for the responses!

Sorry i should have explained what i meant exactly by "old videos", basically stuff that i haven't watched in a while, but do enjoy and would not like to delete. for example, if i've watched all the episodes of a TV show i might want to watch some again at a later date.

I already have this stuff spread over 2 external 2TB drives (which is backed up by a larger Drobo) but as already said, drives are quite cheap per GB nowadays so it would be an option to buy more.

Based on what you are describing it sounds like you are fine the way you are. If your are just running out of space (which I think is what you are saying), then yes just keep expanding your HD space.

The great thing about your Drobo is that its easy to add capacity. I just went to Fry's and got a pair of 3 tb drives for $300
