So I only own an iPad and my iPhone. I used to have a dSLR a few years ago, but sold it because I wasn't really using it.

I recently purchased a refurb Canon G1x because I wanted something that I could take pictures with for my upcoming trip, upload them on my iPad (after I get back), and then email them to people and otherwise save them.

What do you guys think about this?

Just use the iPhone and iPad for the shots and Photos for snapshot editing. Use a standalone camera when you are ready for showing and post processing raw images.

Agreed, but the OP has already bought the G1. Unless you expect the need to zoom in optically (can't do it with your feet) then the iPhone will probably meet all your needs for vacation snaps. There are plenty of apps for editing on the iPhone and ipad and they work great. My favs are Snapseed and Photoshop Express. The IOS Photos app does a good job too. If you want to use the G1 then you just have to figure out how to get the photos onto the ipad. If the G1 does wireless...there's an app for that. If not then the best way is probably to get the iPad USB card reader. It works just fine.

BTW, older iPads (don't know about the latest ones) take horrible pics and videos. Even if you still use an iPhone 4 I would chose it over the iPad.

I think it's a bad idea. I don't think you'll get the most out of your gear that way. If you have a computer, you should download them to that and use Canon software which is free to edit them, even better if you have photoshop. To get the most of out that camera, I would shoot RAW. But if you don't have a computer or don't want to bother with all that then honestly just use your iPhone to shoot images, especially if you plan to edit on iPad or iPhone.

I've never used a Canon G1x but on paper, the larger sensor should give you better results than the small sensor 'cameras' you've been using. Did you shoot RAW with your dSLR and know your way around it? If not, you could just use JPEG and enjoy and not worry about it. Shooting RAW will allow you to get more out of your photos but they usually need to be processed to make the most of them. If it's a special trip and you think one day you'll get back more into photography you could shoot RAW + JPEG and save the RAW files for the future. Given you've got the camera now you've time to play around with it and decide how you want to use it before your trip. Don't use your trip to learn the camera.

Just enjoy the camera and the trip!

Just bought a Ricoh GR myself.

It's not that similar a camera other than it is a similar size.

I really enjoy being able to have a camera on me all the time and something that has more quality than my iPhone.

The key thing is to take it with you everywhere and be willing to grab it whenever you need.

What do you think? You're the one who has to look at this pictures you take with what you have and decide what you like better. Do you see a difference? Is it enough to make it worth having the extra camera? If you can answer yes to those questions, you don't need our opinion.
