notebooks only have one port for external monitors. So.. you can only run one external monitor plus the lapotp monitor. If you are getting a macbook pro I would go with the one 30" or one 23" as they are both big.. What do you plan on using the mac for?

As for the new monitors.. I have no clue I have not heard anything so I'm sure its going to be a bit. Maybe by Q3 when new intel chips come out (and I hope a 23" imac intel ;) )

I suspect we will see major updates to the Cinema Displays at WWDC later this year. If you can hold out till then, then do. If you need it now, go for the 30"! Its a great display that will keep you happy for years.

i just want more real estate. the bigger the better. i do graphic, animation, and video work. plus i watch all my movies on my laptop.

im waiting for a new "power" mac in the mean time. my powerbook is doing me fine at the moment.

By the time they release the new Mac <- might be new name for "powermacs" they will have released new monitors. I don't think the design is going to change, they will have better display specs and might include isight and mic, nothing huge tho. If you can wait, do it :) if not then you wont lose.
