If someone's main objective was to use a device as an eReader, what are your thoughts on the iPad?

As someone that was recently considering purchasing an eReader, but held off to see what the the Apple tablet would be. And to see that for basically the same money (if you're comparing to Kindle DX), you can have so much more than just an eReader, this seems like an easy decision.

I'm optimistic about it. The one big elephant in the room is whether reading on an lcd for an extended period of time can be an enjoyable experience. I think it can. I'm on the computer all day reading forums and articles and what not and while there is some fatigue, it doesn't feel like noticeably more than had I read a book all day.

I agree; I have had every model of Kindle from 1 to DX and while I think it's great e-book device I also spend a huge number of hours every day reading and writing on an LCD panel display without any fatigue. Unless my hands-on in-store experience turns out badly, I'll be selling the DX and buying a 3G iPad, as it does so much more (and so much faster; even the DX is a bit poky) that the extra cost is still a bargain.
