I have to say that I was kind of dissapointed by the ad, not sure what exactly I didn't like about it, but it just didn't seem as creative as the ipod ads or the "I'm a mac, I'm a PC" ads. What do you fellow Mac heads think?

I like it and for those who haven't seen it, its on Apple's front page now.

Meh, it's just an ad. Quite enjoyed seeing all the bits of films that I like though... Amelie, Zoolander, Big Lebowski, etc.

I suppose they can't say too much considering they'll probably release it in June only to have to recall it three months later for defects... you know how it is with Apple... first revisions, etc!! :p

Stupid. No point other than trying to tie-together pop culture references to an unreleased expensive geek toy.

i say your view of the ad may be incorrect....it was unveiled during the oscar awards. the point of ads during such events do not necessarily show of the function of a product but bring awareness because millions of people are watching. they become aware of a product so they will then research it or find out mor information. regarding pop culture references when is a better time to reference pop culture than a pop culture awards show???????????

i liked it, its a bold move on apples part. get a lot of people interested, but have a turn off of it coming out in june. that'll grind some people's gears.

I kind of like it, the b&w reminds me of the old Think Different ads. It gives the sense of history and of a coming revolution. However, the problem is the payoff is weak. You see the iPhone at the end and yeah, it looks OK, but basically it just looks like another pretty smart phone. It's got some nifty features, but at least in its first iteration, it just doesn't seem that revolutionary. Then again, I thought the same about the first iPod. :)

Well I am on a seriously slow internet connection here at school! and it blocks me from downloading quicktime so I am unable to see it! But something that i did notice is the text underneath the ad saying that it has not passed the FCC's rules (yet) and may not be released for sale!

This is probably old news so sorry for posting!

Just to be clear, it is not a B&W ad. It is an ad composed of movie clips. Some of the clips are B&W, but others are in color as is the clip of the iPhone at the end.

Isn't it a movie tradition in itself that you announce something coming in the summer or some other point in the future? I know it's usually films that are advertised in this way, but it is a clever cultural reference - an ode to the movie trailer, because movies are going to be watched on it.

i like that thought.

I think it was a waste of money on Apple's part. More appropriately, they should have pugged the :apple: TV. At least it will be available at the end of the month.

I watched the Oscars with several non-Apple geeks. Not one of them mentioned the ad in conversation, unlike the Mac vs. PC ads.

Am I the only one who noticed that at doesn't say iPhone at all in the ad? It just says "Hello (no period) Coming in June". Could the one sentance mean something? Possible name change? I really hope not and it probably won't be. But just in case, I'm calling a name change to "Hello" by June. :p :apple:

That's a very good point. What product could be more appropriate for them to hype during the Oscars. And it's a shipping product at that. Kinda weird, I thought the AppleTV was going to be huge and revolutionary, but it seems like it really came out flat and deflated. Clearly the iPhone dominating the MW keynote didn't help. I think Jobs made a mistake there. By being so enamored with the iPhone, it made the AppleTV look like a half-finished afterthought that he (and Apple) had already moved on from.

The iPhone will be big, but I think Apple is missing a huge opportunity to get in early on the complete video content downloading solution. They could dominate this market if they throw all their resources at it, but other players like Netflix and Blockbuster and Amazon and M$ and Walmart are making noise. Sooner or later one of them is going to come out with a product that doesn't suck so much and gain momentum. Not signing all the studios is really hurting Apple in this space, as is failing to offer a way to rent movies instead of having to purchase them to watch them.

I think some of you are missing the point of the ad. Its advertising its movie playing and phone capabilities. The two biggest selling points.

To do that in such a simple way is quite an acheivement.

About 5 people in my office this morning all said the same thing, "So Apple's changing the name to Hello?"

Good catch, and yes that does scream "ripoff" if not "lawsuit".

Wow. This commercial was clearly a knockoff of that video. I would only assume that they had permission. Whether or not they have permission, there is no denying the lack of originality in that commercial. I thought it was creative at first, but now I'm disappointed. They can come up with original ideas, so why don't they?

Way to subtle. If I hadn't seen the keynote, I would've never know that that's what it meant—and I'm still not sure it does. I think it would have been cool if they zoomed to the phone on which a film-segment would be playing and then the phone would ring. Then that annoying Apple-guy from the commercials could answer and say: "Hello?"
