Hey I need some advice, do you like this icon ?
It's for a music player app. The little squares have a meaning in the app but it's a secret until the app is out :)

I really dislike the white border, aside from that, looks alright I guess, pretty simple, but I guess if the squares have meaning it'll work out :)

Well since it seems that people need some awesome icon or they'll uninstall an otherwise functional app, it's ugly to me. Perhaps it is the white border or the over use of the glossy effect.
And will Apple allow a music player in their store or does it do something like stream radio like Pandora?

I *might* reduce the shadow effect that the play button is casting onto the squares a little bit, but that's just me.

Definitely go with the border styles from your second set (either very small or non-existent).

I've done a couple more experiments...

All icons are shown here, what do you like most (none is a possible answer :) )

Thank you !!

Lose the drop shadow. Possibly add a thin border on the triangle instead. Possibly bevel the triangle like perhaps the trism icon. Or a sharp bevel.

Definitely keep the reflection after you lose the shadow. The shadow doesn't make physical sense. Especially so large and dark. And especially with the gloss which pretends the light source is from above.

Increase the size of the squares in the background to 6x6 or 4x4, then offset them some so it's not so symetrical. Small black outline on the triangle. Small white outline on the icon. No drop shadow. Gloss. Definitely gloss. The gloss creates a nice bevel on the triangle.

Yup - get rid of the shadow.

Also, I know the squares are integral to your app but they make the background look very busy.

Have you thought about reducing the number of squares? (i.e. zooming in a little, making the squares bigger).

RTP.

Get rid of the shadow.

And the colours are very jarring and don't look good together.

Basically it's quite an ugly icon IMO

Between 2 or 3 for me, the shadow is definitely a bit over powering, might wanna loosen up a bit on the opacity rather than size

Thank you !!

I'd vote for the number 4. Although I'd like to see a mix between number 2 and 4 (basically, a number 2 with gray triangle).

Seems that #3 is the winner :)

I'll try to make a couple adjustments following the suggestion someone posted on icon #3 to see how it looks.

Thank you !!

Im not graphic designer, but I'd try changing the play button to plain black. Black seems to work better one a multi-colored background than white.

As I am not real sure about the specifics of your app, I'm not sure if any of these ideas might spark some interest for you. I just thought I'd share a few quick ideas I had.

I too think you may have too many boxes going on and as you only have 6 colors represented collectively, I tried to simplify things.

I hope I'm not stepping on anyones toes but thought since you asked for our thoughts I might chime in with a couple designs.

I like the third one here, but would be better without the gloss seeing as the iphone does this itself. If i were the OP, i would use that one and give you credit for it.
