iPod What does "enable disk use" do in my iPod?

I have never actually used this feature before today and when I restored my iPod because of a problem Iw as having it was automatically selected. Prior to this option being selected my song and movies took up about 10GB on my iPod. Now, with this enabled, iTunes is only showing 4GB used. Does this option have some sort of space-saving aspect to it that would cause this reduction in size and regardless of the space-saving issue, what does this feature do?

on a mac, it enables you to use it just as you would an external drive.

And can you, or anyone, explain the significant decrease in disk space usage associated with using this feature?

there will only be "siginificant" disk space lost if you put data on the ipod...
The amount of space loss is equivilant to what you put on the disk...
