Depends on the nature of your data. Is it sensitive and what would happen, IF (big if) it gets into the wrong hands?

I rarely encrypt my data, even it would be stolen, it is backed up and no one can do anything with it anyway.

FileVault causes more problems than it solves. You're better off keeping sensitive data in an encrypted .dmg file that you can create in Disk Utility.

FileVault is dead.

FileVault 2 is completely new and I've had absolutely no problems with it. It makes sure the computer needs a password before it will even boot. It also supports encrypting of external drives.

Seriously, I'm watching the WWDC videos and Apple officially hated FileVault. FileVault 2 is completely new.
