FileVault causes more problems than it solves. You're better off keeping sensitive data in an encrypted .dmg file that you can create in Disk Utility.
FileVault is dead.

FileVault 2 is completely new and I've had absolutely no problems with it. It makes sure the computer needs a password before it will even boot. It also supports encrypting of external drives.

Seriously, I'm watching the WWDC videos and Apple officially hated FileVault. FileVault 2 is completely new.
