What does "Lock Screen" do?

Just click on it. What should happen? Do you think your Mac will explode or something? Also the words "Lock Screen" should give you a slight hint, what it will do.
I was hoping it would allow me to clean the keyboard and screen without screwing up my login password. I'm still trying to figure out a way to turn off a computer that never turns off.

Maybe I'm not understanding but the best way to turn the puter off would be going the menu bar under the apple icon and go to shut down and then clean your keyboard. To tuen back on the puter, press the button on the back. I use alcohol wipes and they never did any damage. Or you can turn the keyboard off and clean it.
