What does the low spec IPAD mean for the new Iphone???

Just wanted to know what you guys think, I ve been keeping a close eye on the Ipad and all the speculation surrounding the Iphone 4G (HD).

Now that the Ipad as been released and been stripped down to see whats inside:

An over clocked version of the 3gs processor
256 mb RAM

Im really not holding out much hope for the next Iphone being anything special, I certainly dont think its going to been anything like the HTC EVO or the HTC Desire we have here in the UK.

Do you guys honestly think that apple will release the new Iphone with better specs than their new Ipad so soon after its released and especially since people are already calling the Ipad a big Iphone.

Your thoughts??
 
The A4 is based of off the A8 Cortex, but it's not just simply the same thing. Apple wouldn't spend billions in R&D on developing their own silicon just to use the same stuff.

The 256mb of RAM is really no surprise, and is utterly sufficient for now. The iPad blows my 3G S away in terms of speed, so I'm not worried that it's 'underpowered.'

As far as the next iPhone, it'll probably feature the same processor, and 512mb of RAM. Developers are either making universal or platform specific apps now, so I'm not really worried about iPhone apps being slow on the iPad, especially since I refuse to use them on my iPad because they look so atrocious.

Thats my concern, will Apple really put twice as much ram in the Iphone as they have in the Ipad?? I was considering the Ipad but I already own an Iphone and I know im going to upgrade to the next Iphone because like most people I need my phone and cant really see the point of owning both. So if what your saying is true I will be better of staying with the Iphone because the new one will have better specs than the ipad??
 
I don't think you'll see more than 256 until perhaps 5.0

If Apple believes 256 is good enough for the iPad, then it's certainly enough for the iPhone. Apps on the iPad are no doubt larger/more memory intensive if only because graphics are larger and video processing because of the screen size.

Then again - how much does this really matter if all your apps work well. Is it just comforting to know that you have more ram even if it's really not needed?

Now - that being said - what the heck is an "over cocked" version ;)
 
What it means for the iPhone's hardware specs is completely irrelevant.

What it means for the iPhone's user experience is excellent news.

The 3GS flies as is, and I have mine loaded for bear - 2700 contacts and 8 pages full of apps. Any improvements to the hardware - whether CPU, RAM, GPU, or otherwise, will only make a great device better. Same too with OS4 - if Apple's followed a similar path as they did with Snow Leopard, i.e. dramatically trimming the OS' and related apps' footprints, the experience will only improve.

Hardware specs <> user experience. User experience >>>> hardware specs.

lol, thanks for pointing out that typo!

My 3gs is only 256mb ram so Im hoping for an upgrade to that, also when playing certain games they crash or stutter so more ram would be a lovely addition but if they havent put more in the Ipad then I dont think its going to happen.

Also I would love to listen to last.fm while playing games so the idae of multi tasking in os 4.0 sounds good but if i get games stuttering on 256mb of ram now without multi tasking what chance is there really.
 
If apple would have put 1024mb in there people still would have moaned.

I Think the main issue is people are looking at the ipad and the iPhone as full blown computers running full blown os's. Don't get me wrong there both computers in there own right the same as my washing machine is. BUT...

Apple has locked down the os and devs are forced through the app store if they want to put something on either the iPhone or the ipad. Devs are far from stupid so if there app dosnt run well sales will be poor.

I Think people need to look at the ipad/iPhone as a games console like the xbox or ps3. The hardware is locked so build something impressive that'll run on that platform.
What's happening is the other way around people are thinking more like everything in the world needs an i5 or i7 and should sing and dance out of the box.

Well the ipad/iPhone can sing and dance if there's an app for it ;)

Wake up and smell the coffee people your in apples playground, if ya don't like it microsoft is 3blocks down on the left!
 
I have yet to have issues with low memory on my 3GS, and I'm running a bunch of jailbroken mods. I don't require more ram on the next iPhone. I think the iPhones will alternate between major cosmetic/minor hardware upgrades and minor cosmetic/major hardware upgrades, and the 3GS was a minor cosmetic/major hardware upgrade. Next iPhone will have a new case, more storage and little else.

Not sure why folks don't think about the flash memory as being temporarily available for memory intensive situations. Highly doubt Apple will miss the opportunity.

We'll probably hear about this in some shape or form at the OS 4.0 announcement. And you can be sure the iPad will be the primary device to take advantage of this. Funny with all these critics, you'd think they would at least mention this as a potential. It's been used on OS systems for years. :p

Agreed. A jailbroken 3GS is freaking amazing. Unfortunately, because Apple made me buy an iPad, I now am officially out of the running for a new iPhone :) for now ;)

Jk, they didn't make me. I just think it's perfect the way it is, a JBen 3GS w/ MyWi and a 32GB iPad. And: no extra $30/month charge by AT&T ;)
 
I don't Think it means anything b/c the iPad was probably designed in tandem w/ the 3GS. The next iPhone must destroy Android. Destroy.

The limited RAM is a legitimate gripe, IMO because of Safari's complete lack of ability to open multiple tabs without having to reload them between switching. I had to retype this comment due to this. I am hoping OS 4 addresses this somehow because as is, this is not the best browsing experience. It's the best web reading experience, but if you are researching or doing some other task which requires lots of tabs, it is lacking.

I'd rather have the site reload. But I guess it's only useful when it's a news site or something that changes every so often
 
I think everyone who knows Apple should know by now that they never did and never will have the most bleeding edge hardware. Apple has always been about the user experience, thats why they don't normally list what the specs are in their hardware, they don't want users such as the OP to become obessive about what they put in the package as long as the experience is seamless and great.

There are plenty of top spec'ed phones out or even machines out there, but they don't always outclass Apple's because in the end, consumers don't care if it has 256MB or 512MB, they just care how well it runs. The techies constitute probably less than 1%, the rest don't know jack nor care.
 
New iPhones and Touch will have the same A4 as Jobs stated that when he introduce the iPad, therefore you will have the same 256MB RAM.

What you may expect is the front facing camera, new display and res, maybe the screen rotate lock like iPad.

We won't see new hardware until next year.

The user experience definitely suffers from the paultry amount of RAM in the 3GS (haven't tried the iPad yet). Safari's constant reloading of tabs drives me crazy, to just name one example.
Also, I would have mixed feelings about seeing the A4 in the next iPhone. Sure, it's fast, but it's last year's architecture. New phones and tablets this year will feature ARM's new Cortex A9-processors, and so should the new iPhone. Frankly, I was shocked when I learned that the iPad wasn't already using an A9. Apple really needs something that blows their Android competition out of the water (especially the upcoming Evo).
