what dose every one think of the ipad camera kit

I spent more than its retail price a few months ago when they had a shortage. I had a hard time to justify my spending, but I needed it as I was about to travel. As for performance, I have no complaints. It works flawlessly.

If performing as advertised is "limited" for you then maybe your expectations are a tad high.
It's very easy to use and works flawlessly - I used it on a trip to show and display dozens of pictures I downloaded to it. Well worth it.
It works with my old Apple Pro Keyboard. I get an error pop-up that says it's not compatible, but once I dismiss it, it works great.
I love my kit. It allows me to dump photos onto the iPad on trips so that I can either delete them from the camera and/or have a backup.

mine works perfectly well for its intended & advertised purpose - i.e. importing photos from digital cameras via USB or SD Card.
I use mine to backup photos on my iPad while traveling without a laptop.
Why I personally think the kit is a waste of cash, I must agree with this above statement.
On second thought, maybe I could see it coming in handy when vacationing. Where I want to view by days end the photos I took on a bigger display than the LCD on the camera.

Especially since it means the kid can transfer pics from my p&s camera to her iPad so easily. I don't store my photos on the iPad sync machine so it is always a pain. Wait, maybe that is where my cable is!!

Well, it would be cool if it was included with the iPad, but it's not. Apple is getting stingy these days: Not even a microfibre cloth, cheap bastar%#. (mind you I was suprised to find two white Apple stickers in the box. I didn't even get any with my last Mac desktop.)
But Apple can still sell them by the millions.
I find the VGA connector more useful 'case I connect to projectors. I also have the composite cables.
But sure if you want to get photos and video from an iPhone to the iPad quickly, or from a computer you don't have your iTunes account on, then the convenience is worth it.

Apparently in iPad firmware 3.2.2 Apple removed the keyboard functionality. A similar thread is floating around.

And I didn't expect nothing more than to transfer photos. In my opinion $29 is worth it to me. They charge $29 for the iPhone 4 bumper. I think we are getting a decent value. They could have easily charged $19.95 per each adapter in the camera connection kit.

Hmm, this I did not realize. I just checked and I'm still on 3.2.1 (since jailbreaking my iPhone in the past I have been less quick to update). Maybe I'll hold off a little longer.
I don't need that because I shoot always RAW files with my Canon DSLR. Those are easy 20 MB in size and I would need a RAW converter. Don't think that I want to bother my iPad with that. That's still a task for the big brother iMac or MBP when on travel.

I think it's great.
I just came back from a trip to Bruges (it's in Belgium) yesterday and it was great to be able to check out the photos right on the spot to see how they were working out without having the weight of a notebook.
It was also cool to start shifting through the photos to delete rejects again without having to bring a notebook.

Can you import video from your camera on it? The Apple site clearly states yes here in a short statement:

But in the main overview on the website it says nothing about video from camera:

I have the camera kit and bought it for the same reason others mentioned which was to download pictures while on vacation. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it downsizes the photo size when it downloads them.
Maybe I missed a setting somewhere on the iPad, but I have the camera set at 3 meg photos and they are 1 meg on the iPad. In other words, don't delete the photos on your camera if you want the larger size later.
EDIT: MANY HAVE POINTED OUT THAT THE ABOVE IS NOT TRUE, SO DON'T HIT REPLY UNTIL READING ON.

Wow, if that would be the case it's even more meaningless for me, the only reason to use the adaptor would be to transfer the images direct via 3G to a fileserver. But when the files get shrinked ...
Interesting to read others experience here.
Works great. I took it to an out of town wedding and had wedding and reception pics ready to show on my iPad ten minutes after the event was over. I anticipate extended functionality in the future as well.
You can import and display most HD (1280x720)m-jpg videos, many coming in the .AVI container on a host of point and shoots. MP4 format is a little more finicky. It appears any HD MP4 files can be transfered, but it doesn't want to play if video resolution is higher than the iPad's 1024x768 display. Those need to be converted.......don't ask me why?
I took my iPad on a campout with some friends recently and the kit allowed me to copy my friends photos and videos from their cameras before we left.
The iPad and camera kit is a handy combo for motorcycle road trips. I can transfer photos from the trip and in the motel at night email some nice quality photos to my family. Way better than cell phone pics.
FYI the iPad can view Canon .CR2 RAW files imported with the CCK. I have tried this with my 40D - RAW-only files are recognized (not just RAW+JPG)
However you are right about your concern with RAW file sizes - if you shoot s lot of RAW the iPad may quickly fill up. But it is still useable with RAW
