Downloading camera photos to the iPad does not downsize them.

The originals are fully recoverable when connecting iPad to your Mac. I have 14GB of photos from a recent trip which confirm this.

Note: if you load photos to your iPad FROM your Mac via iPhoto and iTunes they ARE downsized (to approx 2x screen resolution). Perhaps that's where there is some confusion here?

I have the camera kit and bought it for the same reason others mentioned which was to download pictures while on vacation. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it downsizes the photo size when it downloads them.

Maybe I missed a setting somewhere on the iPad, but I have the camera set at 3 meg photos and they are 1 meg on the iPad. In other words, don't delete the photos on your camera if you want the larger size later.

again, the CCK does NOT downsize imported photos, if you connect your iPad to computer you can recover the imported images in original full size.

but I just had another thought where you might be encountering this problem.

Note that if you try to email a photo directly from the iPad's Photo app, by simply using the "email to" link at upper right, the iPad WILL send a reduced size version of the photo.

However, here's the trick how to email a FULL size original picture from the photos app

1. import the photo using the CCK
2. view the photo in the Photos app at full screen sie
3. tap and hold the photo, you should see the Copy button popup
4. copy the photo
5. go to Mail, create your message, then PASTE the photo

this will copy/paste the full size original photo into your mail message
give that a try

Is it possible the iPad retains both a downsized version for you to display and play around with, while also storing the original full-size version for later importing into iPhoto?

yes, I think is probably what's happening, for display purposes on iPad. but the full size original is definitely uploaded to the iPad using the CCK. see my above post about trying to email photos.

some card readers draw too much power to work with the CCK. I know my cheapo card reader doesn't work with it, but I have heard others have successfully done so.

in my case, to upload photos I just connected my DSLR w/CF card (EOS 40D) directly to the iPad + CCK using a USB to mini-USB cable

Just because you shoot in 3 MP doesn't mean you'll get a 3 MB sized file, a filesize of 1 MB sounds right to me...

FYI the iPad can view Canon .CR2 RAW files imported with the CCK. I have tried this with my 40D - RAW-only files are recognized (not just RAW+JPG)

As far as I can tell, iPad appears to be generating a preview JPEG from the JPEG embedded in the .CR2 file from my 350D. And this is with just RAW files not RAW + JPEG.

Sorry that I riled everybody up.

I took a pic this morning to make sure and the file downloaded to iMac directly from the card is 2.2 meg. When I transferred it to the iPad and then sent it to my iMac via Dropbox, it is now 1.2 meg.

However, I just imported the same photo from my iPad to iPhoto and it is ~2.2 meg.

So, gee whiz, I'm sorry about the confusion and getting everyone in a huff. I'm sort of new to this Apple stuff.

So, my question is what is the easiest way to transfer raw photos from the iPad to my desktop?

I purchased the CCK before a trip abroad. First time I took a trip without my Dell laptop(3.5 pounds) or Asus netbook(2.5pounds). I was travelling light(one backpack) and the iPad was a backsaver.

CCK and Filterstorm app worked beautifully together. I was able to import images and video from a Panasonic LX-3. I could even e-mail the video after iPad recompressed them. Filterstorm also allows FTP of images as well as IPTC captioning on sent images. Very cool.

I only regret getting the 16gb 3g instead of 32gb but found out ways to maximize space.

A space-saving trick ofr importing .mp4 TV shows and movies from the SD card for deleting after viewing to free up space: Just convert your movies/shows(using handbrake) to mp4. Create a "DCIM" folder on your root SD card then copy mp4 files to that directory. I put 14 gb of movies and shows on two 8gb cards.

Just import what you want to watch, go to "Last import", watch, then delete. Better than adding them using itunes because you cannot delete without hooking up to a computer.

The only problem is that Apple doesn't show the names of video/image files so you have to click on icons to find what you want or jot down episode/movie name based on video length displayed in the import window.

Thing is, that's where my whole "it should of came with a slot reader in the first place" argument comes in.

I love it, and it's really not a bad price for the two adaptors. If they could have included a slot reader and USB hole on the iPad itself and increased the price of the iPad by $5, I still would've preferred it as it is, because I don't need to plug in an SD card very often, plus I know not everyone needs it. I expect we'll get WiFi photo transferring from cameras to the iPad before we see a card reader built into the iPad. But you never know...

I love my kit. It allows me to dump photos onto the iPad on trips so that I can either delete them from the camera and/or have a backup.

CF memory (have not tried CF with HD) + USB CF card reader + USB iPad adapter works with my iPad.

Same here, and my card reader works fine with the USB attachment from the camera kit. The iPad behaves as if a camera were connected to it, so long as the card has a DCIM directory that contains the images or video.

And I didn't expect nothing more than to transfer photos. In my opinion $29 is worth it to me. They charge $29 for the iPhone 4 bumper. I think we are getting a decent value. They could have easily charged $19.95 per each adapter in the camera connection kit.

Well guys, I was having a problem with my jailbreak, so I officially went up to 3.2.2. I said screw it, and went to 3.2.2. I plugged in my camera connection kit, and it popped up the same message about this USB device is not supported. I went into Notes, and my USB keyboard WAS IN FACT WORKING.

So, there ya go . If you want video, I can provide that if you wish .
