What exactly is Merom?

Hey y'all, I should preface this by saying that I know nothing about computers or the finer inner workings that go on inside of them, and a large superficial part of why I want a white Macbook is because "it's just so pretty".

That said... what exactly is the difference between Yonah and Merom? A lot of people talk about waiting till Merom and I've even googled it but I'm still not clear. If it's really better to the point that I'll recognize it and somehow affects this heat/mooing issue in some way (don't ask me to explain this connection...I can't) then I want to wait for it... but if it's not going to be horrible earth-shattering... I might have to go for the

1.83, 80GB, 1G Ram, all program pre-installed (Microsoft Office, Firefox/thunderbird, eBrary, Write and Cite etc.) white Macbook my college is selling us for $1387...

Right now I'm on a 2-year old Dell that's starting to see the light... and by that I mean it's crawling towards computer death, not that it's getting better.

Help?

I don't think it's going to make much of a difference to you.

The people that are waiting for Merom are the ones that are going to be waiting for the next chip once the next gen of Macbooks/MBPs come out.

As far as the mooing/weird sounds, it may or may not have them. It's a gamble, really.

And who knows how long, or if they'll even put a merom in a Macbook..

I'd get it now. You'll be waiting forever if keep looking for the next best thing...

thanks for the link! but I'm still kinda confused about all the same stuff I was before... I get that Merom is 64-bit and the next in line after Yonah... but I'm computer-retarded...

Merom will use less power and offer better performance (not sure how much better) than Yonah. It will also be a 64-bit processor - not that this will make much difference to most users for sometime to come. Unless you use lots of processor intensive applications for image and/or sound a Yonah lappy should do you just fine.

there are a TON of threads about merom vs yonah, and there is even a macrumors guide to merom..

basically the consensus i've read is that merom isn't going to be earth-shattering unless you're using very processor-demanding apps.. the number i heard was about 20% faster than yonah. basically, if you're just word processing, web surfing, itunes, blogging, email, etc... then waiting for merom really isn't necessary.. the MB/MBPs now will do the job great.

so it probably won't address the heat/moo/whine issue? I thought I read somewhere that because of the way they use power, it's less taxing for the Merom computer to do the same stuff a Yonah computer does so there's less heat etc?
