I'm starting to become more mobile and starting to watch video on my ipod more. However, I need to start converting my mp4 files for appletv to work on the ipod also. I know how to do this just fine with handbrake. My question is what file type do I use so that the same file can play on both devices? I will be purchasing an ipad with tax refund (thank you uncle sam) and I want the same file to work on that to.

Any advice?

I do use the preset, however, when I try to move the file form iTunes to the iPod touch, it says that it cannot be played on the iPod.

Is it a 4th gen? If it's older, it won't be able to play videos as large as the newer ones can.

It depends on what iPod you have. The latest iPod Touch has the same processor as the iPhone 4, ATV2, and iPad. Therefore if you use the ATV2 preset in Handbrake (allowing 1280x720p HD files), it will play on all of those devices. If you want to maximize compatibility with even the oldest iPods and don't mind sacrificing quality on your bigger screens you can use the Universal preset. There are other presets in between the two extremes I believe.
