I'm kind of OCD about my music collection (and by kind of, I mean a lot). I'm trying to decide how I want my music to be sorted by genre, and what genres to include. How do you sort yours? Thanks.

Oh, and then sub folders with composers/bands etc
Now thats "Organization" on steroids.
I use the Genre and Grouping features. Genre is what the music belongs to, and for some I have made up a Genre, like DMB is the Dave genre. Then I also use Grouping. So all the female artists are in grouping Gerl. All live tracks are Live grouping. All acoustic are Acoustic grouping. Though with 7000+ songs in my iTunes I have all my tracks tagged with Name, Artist, Album, Year, Genre, etc. but not all have Groupings yet. They also all have Album art which was key for Coverflow and the iPhone.

I have a few custom genres (Like 'Geek' for when I am in a, well, geeky mood and 'Instrumental Rock' for when I feel like choosing something rockin' without lyrics). To me, most metal from the 80's is Hair Metal, which is a distinction that I think needs to be made for my library since 80's metal had a distinctive sound. The rest of my library is categorized correctly.

Yeah, i'm pretty anal when it comes to my music library. Feel free to change iTunes' genres and their information tacked on to the cd's. For example, it call Coldplay "Alternative & Punk" which I changed to alternative. I have 20 genres. I try to fit cd's under a genre, but it's tough to call.

I hate the generic genres, I use ones i make like "ambient alternative" , "Indie Pop", "Folk-Rock", et al. to be more specific.
I too make playlists of certain "sounds" however like "Modern Acousticish" for softer rock, acoustic, some softer indie, folk, and other softer influences. Then there's "Chill Out" which has some of those same sounds as that but more focus on ambient music and includes some electronica stuff. Then there's a pretty obvious "Indie/Avantgarde" playlist I have... Much better for getting only certain songs you want in lists for when you want randomized selections of certain sounds (and when smart playlists do not suffice).

I use the standards: Rock, Alternative, Pop, Country, Comedy, Movie, Show. And then I have "Issue Rock" for my wife's and son's (using this loosely) music. Unchecked so I never have to worry about syncing them. My daughter's genre of HipHop/Rap/Cussing-Just-Because-I-Can I had to move to another computer -- a PC of course.
