What gift card works on app store?

Hey guys my professor wrote me a nice letter of reccomendation for grad school and I want to get him a gift card for his iphone but I'm confused which gift card works for the app store. Is it the apple gift card? Itunes gift card (probably not I'm guessing), or iphone gift card?

Any iTunes gift card will allow him to buy App Store apps. Apple Store gift cards, on the other hand, only allow for retail purchases.

no apps in canada through gift cards..

I know this because my christmas gift was an itunes gift card, and I was excited because I have bad credit, and have no credit card to buy apps with,
but only to realize that in canada, the gift card can only be used for music and movies.. not apps..
