I'm sure I used to be able to click the search area in Maps and get a fancy icon named 'Pubs'. Now, I can't find it any where. Sure, you can type 'pubs' but it's not quite the same.

this is the "nearby" feature. One thing I noticed is that in the US you get 8 categories and selecting one of them brings up 7 sub-categories with an 8th option to go back. For instance Food->Supermarket, Travel->Petrol, Entertainment->Pubs. In other counties with the "nearby" feature, like the UK, we just get 4 categories to chose from and I don't know why they can't bring the service to every country like including Spain and Italy because it's very useful for tourism.

Yeah. When searching nearby from where you are, the first option listed is Food & Drinks. When I click that, I get icons for Restaurants, Fast Food and Cafes. Maps knows about pubs so why isn't that icon shown, as I'm pretty sure it was before? In the UK, if you're searching for Food & Drinks, there's a good chance you're really looking for a pub!

NB, I see a "Fun" icon which brings up Recreation, Cinemas and Nightlife.

It looks like you have a lot more sub-categories than I do, for some reason.

What's the primary database Apple uses? Yelp for UK? Seems such a mess currently - pubs, corner shops etc, and would like to improve my local area's results

I can't see why the nearby feature can't be enabled in all countries and with the same categories in each country

I think Foursquare does a better job than Apple Maps for nearby discoverability, have you given it a try?

No. Not likely to, either. I'm generally app-averse and keep the number down to a bare minimum on my phone. I don't have Twitter or Facebook or other apps that harvest my personal information. I'd just like the inbuilt apps, like maps, to work well.

Just tried, and pubs of my city are showing under "nightlife", in maps. Have you tried?

Also, under Siri suggestions, I have a "bars" icon, which give me similar results, showing pubs and everything. Here is an example below (not my screenshot). Nightlife is also showing, which seems to be a little bit redundant, but why not Apple? Maybe just to separate pubs and nightclubs, I don't know.

On my phone, 'nightlife' shows a list of bars, dance clubs, pool halls etc. Which is fair enough. But the 'pub' icon is what I want.

The icons that Siri search (nearby) shows appear to be at its own whim. No pub icon of course. On an iPad, turning the screen into landscape mode shows more nearby icons like, for example, Supermarkets. It's a bit of a rubbish UI. I would have expected the ability to swipe to see more icons rather than rotate the device and trust to luck!
