I'm low on hard drive space and am running OS X.2.8

There's a lot of stuff in my "receipts" folder in the Library folder. what are those? Can I delete them? They don't look like they're being used.

What is some stuff I can remove to free up space? Any advise would be awesome.

Thanks!

You might want to try using DeLocalizer, by the util-guru Mike Bombich. It might help you free up some ~200mb of space.

Also, how much space is actually being used by the Receipts directory?
sudo du -sk /Library/Receipts/
will tell you in Kilobytes how much is being stored there. Divide that number by 1024 for Megabytes.
I suspect that the contents of the directory aren't large enough to warrant the removal of anything. Software Update uses that directory to see what has been updated.

Delete all the Printer drivers you don't use, those can easily free up a good 500 megs of space or so. Also, you can delete any desktop pictures in your Library folder that you never use.

He's using Jaguar still..

Also, check /Applications/Installers/ for the Developer Tools installer. That should be fairly sizable and isn't needed if you have no plans on using fink, compiling, or doing development.

Ack! That's twice today I've misread a post.. you're right of course.
My brain inserted "Panther" in place of "Printer". *sigh*

Thanks for the tips. I've saved almost 400 MB of space!

What is the purpose of those receipts anyway? I'm tempted to just trash them.

The receipts are what Software Update uses to know what's been installed.
