Will it let you buy it if you live in the states? Would there be problems with it?

Yes, but wouldn't it be region specific , you buy it from a european store, you only get the euro maps, same with NZ and australia... unless you're going on vacation there, it would be a tremendous waste of money

If you switch I'd think you'd get the new zealand maps. And as they are sold separately you'd still need to buy the US version.

Actually,
The macrumors front page news states they are selling a few versions. One being Tom Tom for Iphone with US Maps..I think US and something else..so if we buy the one in the nz STORE with US maps..will it work?

You'll need a New Zealand billing address in order for the purchase to go through.

I think op

is also hoping to make out with the exchange rate for about a 1/3 price difference wouldn't be a bad plan if were simple. you could go though the hassle to fake your IP as well but as others said they want a New Zealand billing address. :(

That is assuming that TomTom isn't taking the exchange rate into account and won't price the US version of the US&Canada maps for $89.99 (next highest price point over $84.41.)

Apps that are US$0.99 are NZ$1.29 in the New Zealand appstore. Chances are, the TomTom app (US Maps) will be US$99.99.

The appstore pricing was fixed when the appstore came out at the current exchange at the time, which is a large bonus, as it was actually a very good price. Compare with what we pay for US$0.99 songs in the iTunes store - NZ$1.79.

Just curious (and I don't want to change my iTunes store to NZ) if anyone has checked this app out and saw the file size of it. If US maps are included, would the app have all of the US and a larger file size or do you only transfer the states you want loaded on your iphone?

Thats only if they use the same application bundle. If they submit a new binary for the US market, they can price it whatever they want, it doesn't have to remain in line with the NZ pricing..

That's true. I have a feeling they'll use the same application bundle, or keep the same pricing tier. As far as I'm aware, you still choose the pricing tier in US$, and Apple do the conversion, but I could be wrong.
