What happens to all the new defective return Imacs ?

Hi.

I keep reading about various people getting defective Imacs.. they return them and get another to find that too is defective (read in one of the posts) - I wonder what do Apple do with those Imacs.. fix them up and re-sell them as new or as refurbished because technically they are used.. Just like when one rolls out a new car out the showroom..its no longer a new car..

Apple does not fix the refurbished iMacs. They dump them on a new owner as "refurbished". Sometimes there is nothing wrong with the unit. In other cases the unit has cosmetic and operational issues.

Read enough posts in the Apple Discussions forum and you will learn that little examination of the returned units is done. This was VERY apparent during the G5 era of the iMac when customers reported problems with refurbished units. Just the other day someone posted a thread in the MacRumors forum about his refurbished Mac with cosmetic issues.

Most customers don't have problems, but you are indeed taking a risk by purchasing a refurbished unit. As long as the Mac boots alright Apple service personnel don't do much except put a new image on the drive.

Remember you're always going to get people posting they have a faulty Mac, but nobody posts they have a fully working one!

5 years and 5 Macs at our company and all work perfectly. Only a tiny proportion have faults, which will always be the case when you're producing hundreds of thousands of electronic devices.

This is not the case. Apple does not re-sell units that have real problems. They are addressed, resolved, and then sold as a refurb with the same warranty as a new unit.

Apple takes back all the awful computers back from macrumors.com users who found that the aluminum case was 'too aluminum-y', or the glass was to 'glassy', and sells these computers to regular human beings who find no problems and enjoys the several hundred dollar savings.

Exactly! My G4 PowerMac is still perfect from 2001, so why is this the only time mentioning it? Because it works.

Perhaps on some of these they should test the question, "Will it blend?"

But seriously, I would imagine they go through a pretty rigorous certification. I've always heard that refurb items are more scrutinized than new items off the line. That may be a myth of course.

But I quesiton how well the referbs are looked at. I bought a referbed PB a couple years ago (heh, wow has it been that long?) and they keyboard was obviously messed up. took it in to an apple store and they replaced the keyboard and all was good. so i am surprised i got the referb with a bad keyboard, but being under warranty they fixed it quickly and everything else has worked just fine. you would think that when it was 'refurbished' someone would have noticed the keyboard. oh well, i think it was worth the savings, the PB has since been great!
