what happens to apple store demo computers?

Hi - I was wondering if a store employee ( if allowed) would share with us what happens to the store demo units when they are replaced with newer models.

Do you pack & ship them back somewhere? If they go back to Apple - do they have any programs to donate them on to non profits? 501c?

I would not be surprised if they end up being sold as refurbished computers when it is all said and done.

I know that the Apple stores sell returned products once a month, so they may sell the demos along as well.

The store I worked at would sometimes allow employees to buy them for a pretty fair discount but most of the time they were just returned to the warehouse. What they did from there, I have no idea but I'd imagine they were cleaned up, repaired if needed and sold as refurbished.
