What happens to expired @me.com emails?

If one buys MobileMe and then doesn't renew when it expires, do you still have access to the email forever?

Mine expired about a week ago. I can't log into the account anymore. I can't renew it either. I tried to make a new account with the same user name and it wont let me. I guess once it expires and you don't renew it after the 7 days, it is gone forever.

No, it just becomes another Apple ID account that never expires.

You can renew it but you won't get any of your data back, and all e-mail sent to it will bounce until reactivated.
