I am genuinely concerned about HTC. I know they tend to make their mistakes, but to me their biggest ones are lack of understanding that battery life IS important and making sense a resource hog, although it gets lighter each year (small pet peeve with upgrades too but that's skinned device for ya).

I do love the way they design their devices though. The One looks stunning in all the comparison photos against all other phones so far, and the camera in One X was amazing too.

But the fact that people either look for an iPhone or a galaxy (or even blackberry here in Canada) before they will consider HTC is troubling.

So if the same continues this year, what happens to HTC? Could it happen that google allows them to make a nexus once again, or gives them some support considering how samsung is pushing more S-services than google services?

I sure hope they don't die.

HTC is becoming the next RIM: they used to own the market but now they're behind, and although their latest device isn't too bad, they're never going to get their market position back.

Besides, despite the nice materials, their QC has gone to **** these days and their phones are locked down even after you do the official bootloader unlock which just alienates the group that used to be their core customers. And no removable battery or microSD slot? The hell is that?

Whether or not they die altogether depends on how well they can actually run their business. Last time I checked they were still losing money and, unlike Sony, HTC has no other business outside of smartphones to help prop it up, so it's not looking too good if I'm honest.

I'd be sad to see HTC die. The HTC Desire was the king when I got it. Loved it. Was the first real competition to the iPhone IMO. The HTC Hero was good in terms of features but really laggy.

Whatever happens it's their fault. The HTC one is probably the best phone out there, and they put a 4 mp camera in it. This was not the time to experiment. No advertising at all is not going to cut it.

What happened to the idea that Megapixel counts were meaningless?

stupid $300 million Beats crap deal.

expandable storage and removable battery are something many ANdroid users take for granted. most of the recent HTC phones (both windows and android handsets) seems to be removing these very two features. recently they seem to be more concerned about aesthetics than the innards of the handsets.. so..i cant see them going back to previous market share. i think LG will take their spot, or share with Motorola.

I don't know, iPhone doesn't have SD slot and removable battery and personally i don't find it to be that bad. Apple offers 3 storage sizes which will cover majority of needs and the battery is optimized.

I think the problem is they got caught off guard by Samsung and did nothing to counter market the GS3. Right now samsung is quickly becoming the face of android and all HTC can do is watch.

Also they did the same stupidity last year. They had the One X, One S, One V, SV, Desire C, and more all on different carriers. GS3 was on all carriers marketed as one phone. So guess what, people think it is like the iPhone. Universal and great.

Not to mention HTC putting out the One X+ months after One X was another stupid move.

I hope they are not looking forward to do the same this year.

HTC has to open up to the devs also.Samsung came out swinging when the gs3 had removable battery, micro SD slot that supports the new uh1 file system and put it out completely unlockable andno encryption on the boot loader and all the nand flasable hardware.

Meaning you could molest the device down to the first level of the hardware.

Full access to the hardware is what gave the gs3 a push ahead of all the others.

Its basically a nexus device if you want it to be.

Good luck getting HTC to give out the source for its kernel and all the bells and whistles of the device.Samsung on the other hand gave it all to the people.

i am underestimating here but what you say doesnt matter one bit for 98.7 per cent of all samsung gs3 owners.

Please cite sources for your claim per forum rules. (Sorry, I'm being a citation Nazi). Rooting is very important for many Galaxy S3 buyers as evident by the number of people on XDA-Developers and there are several root required apps in the Top 100 of Google Play.

what dont you understand about the word "estimate" and "i"? (sorry, had to)

You said you were just "underestimating" the number in your claim with "i am underestimating here but what you say doesnt matter one bit for 98.7 per cent of all samsung gs3 owners." So that means you mean that your claim applies for more than "98.7 per cent of all samsung gs3 owners" as a factual statement. Plus, I don't agree with your claim.

"underestimating" was meant to be used ironically so the 98.7 was meant to be a low estimation on my part.

anyways, lets not get hung up on reading comprehension, i stand by my estimation.

If you don't get with the program, you lose. It's that simple.

HTC has to also start using its brain and realize that as devices get larger, the power/wake button shouldn't be on top, so far away. Those that were never HTC One X owners, but are planning to become One owners, beware trying to wake and sleep the device during one handed use. It sucks.

Also, stop messing around with the home configuration. Home on the right side just makes NO sense. All to just put their logo. Really senseless. They couldn't find anywhere else to put it? Ridic.

Agree with you about battery management and size, too. Once again, the HTC One X was dreadful when it came to battery life.

Super slow updates don't help their cause, nor does it help releasing it with 4.1. Samsung is not only releasing the S4 with 4.2, but they're releasing it with 4.2.2 which was just pushed out to Nexus devices, what, a few weeks to a month ago? Kudos to them. Shame on HTC.

You are just plain wrong.I'm not going to get into a debate over it but I will leave you with this to think about.

Android is open source and people like being able to have full control over there phone.also have you ever heard of cyanogen mod? You know by far the best android dev in the world, well Samsung hired him as head software guy for the gs3 and note 2 and so on.

So don't come here telling us that people don't want an unlocked cell when Samsung themselves know how important the dev community is and went ahead and hired the very best to work at Samsung.

Its like apple hiring the team that jailbroke the iPhone to help them make ios7

i love that about android, ive rooted and put custom roms on all my devices (htc hero, htc desire hd, samsung note), however, more than 90 per cent of people i know (like 50-60) have never ever thought about rooting their phone and the rest use an iphone and not one of them has ever jailbroken it.

now i know the statistical variation with such a small group is not to be discounted, but dont let the seemingly overwhelming opinion in tech forums /blog discussions cloud your judgement that most people dont visit these sites and have never ever used a spare battery or need more than 3-4 gb of storage space for a bit of music, photos and the likes.

anyways, for me the htc one seems to be the much better value for money and the few drawbacks (sd card, battery, placement of home button) are imho unimportant to most of the consumers. if htc had as much marketing budget as samsung it could outsell it.

From just the first Top 25 paid apps at https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/topselling_paid?feature=top-paid, there is Titanium Backup PRO, ROM Manager (Premium), Root Explorer (File Manager), and ROM Toolbox Pro. Clearly, Android buyers like to root.

Or geeks who like to root are more likely to pay for apps.

I couldn't see a single app in the top 100 free apps that needs root. I'm not saying there aren't any, I just couldn't see them.

Everything might not be as it seems.

Only two things I think HTC does right, since 2012.

Design beautiful looking phones, right up there with Apple. And HTC's screen technology is great too, some of the best smartphone displays on market.

Now what they doing wrong, in my opinion could be the death of them;

They suck at marketing a phone brand. Last few years way too many different models and names, no brand identity. They need one solid line, stick with it, and make same phone for the world, not little different phone for each country.

Battery life, for some reason HTC just can never get the most out if their hardware to give good battery life.

Sense blows. Way to resource heavy.

No S-Off, no true root access, don't get me started on that BS from HTC. Its just alienating the development community.

In addition to my post above, do you know how "top" lists are ordered?

Monopoly is no. 11 with these stats:

2,710 ratings - 3*

Poweramp is no. 12 with these stats:

52,967 ratings - 4.5*

Probably by number of paid downloads over the last while seeing as it is the "Top Paid" chart.
