I guess it will be discontinued and replaced by the SE2/9. Why would Apple keep the 8 in the lineup? The SE2/9 will have at least a better processor.
It seem to me from what I have read that instead of a new "SE" Apple will just upgrade the iPhone 8. The upgrade won't be as functional as the 11 but better than the 8. Goodbye 8. Am I missing something? There is the matter of the 8+.

I know what will happen to my iPhone 8 after the new iPhone 9 appears. It will remain in my possession and I will continue to use it until it becomes obsolete.
I've got the 8 and I see little reason to buy a different phone. The 11 is too big. Give me a break on the price of the 11 Pro! Maybe this new 9 will have something sexy I can't resist but I doubt it. I do take pictures when I travel and a better camera would be a plus.

The iPhone SE replaced the iPhone 5s when it was launched. The same thing will happen when SE2 is launched.

The iPhone 8 Plus is $549 while the XR is $599. I don't think anybody is choosing to save $50 when cross shopping between the two.

I’ve seen a few people get the 8 plus over the XR

According to Apple rep, it’s not the $ alone but more the Face ID vs Touch ID for some folks

Let's not forget that the 8 and 8+ are the last phones with the home button. That's a feature I personally like. I guess I'm not very adept at swiping.

I expect the announcement date for iPhone SE2/9 will slip to this summer. The Coronavirus is impacting Apple's inventory and manufacturing process more than they are admitting. I went to the Apple Store today for APP replacement and I was told the timeframe is 6-8 weeks at best.

The 7 series got axed this year and the 8 series will follow next year. Culling happens every year.
What replaces the 8 Plus remains to be seen.

I think that the 8 and 8 Plus will be discontinued when the 9/SE2 comes out, and I doubt that anything will replace the 8 Plus. The lineup until the fall will be:

9/SE2, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max.

There’s zero reason for Apple to keep the iPhone 8 in their lineup with the introduction of the iPhone 9/SE moving in. But to the average consumer, the iPhone 8 will still be an absolute steal once retailers discount it even further to liquidate any stock. It’s a perfectly capable phone on many levels.
