I was wondering because, I have my mbp15 partitioned and XP installed. When the next OS comes out, or Apple declares the Beta testing of Bootcamp over... what happens to my computer? I can't imagine there is any way for them to disable what I've done. Will I just be able to go on as normal?

My thinking would be that since you partitioned the Hdd into windows and mac, when you update the mac side, the windows side will stay as it has been, so you can still reboot into windows if need be.

Since this next upgrade to OS X is supposed to have integrated the boot camp software, or something like it, into the actual OS, im also wondering how this will work for people who already installed XP using bootcamp beta.

...If that makes any sense.

Just so you know, according to the EULA for Boot Camp, the beta doesn't expire until September 2007. Leopard will be out by then, so there is nothing to worry about.

If I had to guess, Apple wouldn't activly go about making boot camp not work, they'd just remove the download, and tell you that if you lost the file, tough luck. It's not like it'll explode the computer after Leapord is out.

i thought (could be wrong) that when installing BC i read something that after the trial period was over and if you wanted to unisntall, it would remove the xp install and delete and reformat the partition...

yes... no... anyone?

Bear in mind that BootCamp is actually only used in the stage just before you install Windows and when you wish to uninstall Windows.

Once Windows is on there BootCamp doesn't come into play. All BootCamp does essentially is verify your disk volume, partition it accordingly, and write a CD with Windows drivers on.

So once you have Windows installed even if the BootCamp beta was to expire it wouldn't impact the existing installation of Windows.

I would imagine there is a date check in the boot camp file that checks if the date is after say sept 2007 if so it will not install.

Not tried it tho :D

It doesn't matter much if the Leopard will not be free for current BootCamp users. Naturally, whenever you use beta software, you lose your right to whine about things -- after beta install, you're only entitled to submit opinions ;)

Darn I had the perfect opportunity to see what happens when the beta runs out. Darn Darn Darn. A few hours ago I trashed the Windows partition. I was going to set the date forward but forgot. doh

I can't be bothered to reinstall it, since I'd need to borrow USB keyboard and mouse again. Oh well, anyone prepared to try setting the date forward?

I don't think it works that way. I know it doesn't work in reverse. Ever tried setting you date back to try and get a few more days out of a demo? Doesn't work.

That's kind of what I figured. So basically my xp install will stay as it is, but I won't have any kind of tech support (which I don't have now anyways)

Is the screen that comes up to choose which partition to boot up in contained within the MacOS? It appears to me as if it is... and if that is the case it could always be disabled. Hopefully I'll be able to update my mac OS without changing anything on my comp.

No. Its a bootloader. So its more like a firmware option.

That's built into the EFI. I believe that mechanism has existed for a long time as you could previously boot into multiple Mac OS installations that way or boot off a bootable CD.
