The phone’s value is already highly questionable. So what happens in September when the 17 is released and the 16 (presumably) gets the standard $100 price cut?

Ordinarily, the 15 would stick around too, and get a $100 price cut, making it the same price as the 16e. Though by discontinuing the 14, maybe Apple only wants 2 generation plus the “e” phone sold at any one time.

So what do you predict happens?

Only $100 gap between the 16 and 16e is pretty ridiculous. The 16e goes from merely a bad value phone to a terrible value phone.

Maybe the 17 gets a price hike, and the 16 doesn’t get a cut at all, maintaining the $200 gap. This would be the worst outcome.

Or maybe the 16e gets a price cut, though they never cut the price of the SE line before, based on memory.

They will either release a 17e in 2026 or 19e in 2028 [skipping 17e and 18e]

Apple could also just discontinue the 16 and keep the 16e at the same price.
As much as I hope this isn't the case, if the rumours are true and the 17 series receives a price hike for all models...there isn't much of a reason/incentive for Apple to reduce the 16E's price.

Come on Apple, throw us a bone and drop the 16e's price by USD $100 ;)

Nothing.

The regular 16 phones will occupy the price points that the 15 does, I’d expect.

The 15, I imagine will be discontinued as it doesn’t have apple intelligence and it’ll be too close to the 16e in pricing.

I think the next time we’ll see a new e phone is with the 18e (dynamic island!), as by that time, the pricing ladder will be normal again:

18e, 17, 18 ‘air’, 18 pro (with the rumoured ultra and fold at the non price sensitive end)

When the iPhone 17 series is released, the iPhone 15, 15 Plus and iPhone 16 will get removed from the line up.

The iPhone 16e will remain as the entry level model at $599.00. The iPhone 16 Plus will remain in the line up with a $100 to $150 price reduction to $749.00 or $799.00 for those who want a larger screen than the iPhone 16e but don't want to pay $899.00 for an iPhone 17 Air that will have the same sized screen as an iPhone 16 Plus but one less camera lens.

The simplified line up will be:

iPhone 16e = $599.00
iPhone 16 Plus = $749.00 or $799.00
iPhone 17 = $799.00
iPhone 17 Air = $899.00
iPhone 17 Pro = $999.00
iPhone 17 Pro Max (Ultra?) = $1,199.00

My prediction: March 2025: iPhone SE wont see price cut.
Me when Apple cuts price: Poor iPhone SE sales forced Apple to cut.
That’s pretty much the ammo of Apple rumor mongers.

they’ll keep the 16e and won’t update it till 6 months later. Like what pixel does. Let the main phones get the attention for a few months and release the lower cost phones months later so that each release gets the attention it deserves

There is of course no guarantee. But I think the 16e will stick around for a few years. Apple is marketing the 16e as a phone that can last a long time. Therefore, it might seem crazy to release a new one already next year. But of course I could misunderstand Apple's intentions.

What speaks against it is that they have made it part of the 16 Series. That will make it seem more outdated than it is when the 17 Series comes out. SE would have been a better name, or just iPhone E (for essential) - that would have made it more stand alone and long-lasting.

I think the iPhone 15 will be discontinued next time, so Apple will only have Apple Intelligence-ready phones on the shelf. The 16e will stay where it is, at the same price. The normal 16 will also stay, but will drop in price a little. The price of the 17 series will increase a little.

  • 17 Pro Max: $1,199
  • 17 Pro: $1,099
  • 17 Air: $899, $949, or $999 (because it's "special")
  • 17: $799
  • 16e: $599
Or...
  • 17 Pro Max: $1,199
  • 17 Pro: $1,099
  • 17 Air: $999 (because it's "special")
  • 17: $799
  • 16: $699
  • 16e: $599 or maybe drop to $549 with the drop in the 16

In both those scenarios they keep their top phone at the same price, so it doesn't feel as painful. They still have their "floor" device in the 16e at a higher "floor" than they had before the 16e was released. And they get to bump up the standard sized Pro cost, and possibly the standard plus sized device.

I lean towards something like the first scenario b/c it's very clean. But I also struggle to think they'd discontinue the standard 16 after one year.

Who knows...
