What happens when you buy the app and use a promo code?

I'm just wondering... if you bought an app, but then received a promo code, could you use it and get a refund or you just give it away to a friend?

Apple has a tough time giving any kind of refund for app purchases ... it's like pulling teeth ... just pass it a long to a friend
