What hard drive should I buy ?

Hey guys,


As you know I just got my Mac Pro and I would like to do some upgrades, one of them being the hard drive. Can anyone recommend a good hard drive ? I like seagate but lately it seems like they have a high failure rate. Price is a key factor in what I can afford seeing as the food in thailand has really jacked up prices of drives. My current budget is around $150 give or take. Thanks guys and Happy Holidays

This may not be of much help to you but here it goes..
I recently was given a WD external drive for my Mac...
Other then the fact that I had to reformat it. I could not be happier.

Of SATA disks, I'd recommend you go with Western Digital.

As per your budget, it's doable, but you probably won't be able to get over 1TB at current pricing (seeing 1TB Caviar Blacks on newegg for ~$180 at the time of writing this post).

Amazon has the WD1002FAEX for $153.44 (new, includes shipping).

There is another option to wait another two months or so.

Also what are you backing up to? Hard drives? Nothing? If have 2TB of data drives and 1TB of back-up drive that is a problem. Often when bumping up the storage inside the box you often need to also bump up the storage outside for back-ups ( either more external disks , tapes , etc. )

the other option is to get a SSD drive (and split your bulky data from the OS/Applications/core user accounts. ) The SSD prices haven't been impacted much by the floods. $150 can get you 60GB of space which is enough for OS/Apps storage ( unless the Apps are storage pigs. ) [e.g.,

Now is indeed a horrible time to be buying drives. If I had to get a drive right now, Newegg has 1.5TB Caviar Blacks for 179. Seems about the best deal to me. The big question though is what do you need the big drives for. Other than filling them with ProRes or some other uncompressed HD video you will probably enjoy the SSD option more. The original drive in your Pro is fine for Data, the SSD speed boost for a lot of everyday computing is fantastic.

Yeah, I don't get it. Is it just me or have HD prices gone up in the past year? It seems like I got a 1TB for $80 or $90 a year or so ago and now they're like $120 - $130 + "with discount". Or am I just taking crazy pills?

And I expect they'll stay high even after they get everything back up and running for awhile at least, as corporations love profits. Sort of like a mangy dog with a juicy bone...
