What has Apple Music done to my library...

I'm a latecomer to Apple Music and left my MacBook on overnight setting up iCloud Music Library. Now I have what looks like a big mess in iTunes.

First off, iTunes is auto-streaming iCloud copies when the original files are on the computer...? Is that not illogical?

Second, I have loads of duplicates... I play an album and every song plays twice. Madness.

Third, there are a lot of different labels next to my tracks and I'm not sure what they mean?

1. Half my library has no cloud label.
2. A portion of the library has the cloud with an arrow pointing down ('Download')
3. About 1/3 of the library has a cloud with the cross in the middle ('Removed from iCloud')

Can someone please explain what exactly has gone on here? Do I really have to view 'Only Downloaded Music' if I don't want to listen to constant duplicates?

The whole process leaves even a seasoned user very much in the dark...

It's been a shambolic mess for years.

Look forward to some songs you have automatically becoming a different version of what you had ie. live versions becoming the official released version etc...

I just can't wrap my head around it... it also seems that even with 'Only Downloaded Music' ticked a few of my playlists ONLY stream from an internet connection... if I turn off my wifi chunks of songs in those random playlists are greyed out... even though the songs are stored on the hard drive. Seriously who made this?!

Apple Music pulled random albums that are still on Spotify and Play Music. I was affected so many albums are messed up. Duplicated of albums with greatest hits mixed in and messed up gray tracks. I still don't understand how Apple Music is even so popular.

If you don't use iTunes, or simply care about hearing a song or making simple playlists, its probably just fine - after all, its on-demand music with a decent library. If you use iTunes and/or spend lots of time creating playlists, utilizing playcounts, etc... its a mess.

I learned this the hard way with iTunes Match. After 7 years, its not any better with iCloud Music Library.

I did actually manage to sort most of my issues out. I managed to get rid of all the duplicates by looking in the 'Show duplicates' section of the library and sorting by iCloud file type. Then I found out once I'd deleted the Apple Music copies and kept my original files half my playlists were gone because it had replaced the songs in them. I took the opportunity to sort out my playlists for the first time in a couple of years.

Then I had it scan my library again, upload the songs that aren't duplicates anymore, and all is working okay.

Turing off iCloud, closing iTunes waiting about 30 seconds then opening iTunes and turning back on iCloud will update your library if any songs and albums vanish.

I cannot agree more. I have basically limited all my use regarding AM and iCloud to creating and playing music from playlists. I don’t even want to think about the number of times I have discovered songs that were ripped from my collection of CDs and added to playlists I created that are now grayed out. Apparently Apple has decided they belong to them now and need to be re-downloaded so I can listen to my own music. I’ll throw a jammer if I were to even think about what I’d find if I were to leave AM. Hell, I get a headache just thinking about what I’ll have to go through to fix things. For this very reason I’ve stopped ripping anymore of my discs into iTunes. S
