I've always been about getting as much space as I can on my iphone/computers/external hds etc.

This is the first time Ive ever thought about getting the smallest amount. I really want an iPad but don't wanna play more than 500 for one and I feel like I'll really only be doing school work, reading, browsing. I have my iphone for music and videos but I could always throw a movie or two on the ipad.

I feel like I've gone crazy due to being ok with the 16gig. Did I? Am i missing something? Are the iPad versions of apps much bigger is filesize?

I went for the 64 because I don't want to regret running out of space, even though I may not. I have a 32 gig iPhone and its got about 8 gigs free. It holds 3,501 songs, 7,119 photos, 28 music videos, and 67 apps. On the iPad I am not sure but I expect I'll be adding movies and tv shows to that mix cuz the screen is actually large enough to enjoy them...oh, and more photos! I love photos. :D

So, I'd rather spend the extra $100 and have no regrets.

I love showing people videos and photos. All my gadgets have really big HDDs, my ps3, iPhone, mac, everything I always get the biggest available. I honestly would be satisfied with a 120-250GB iPad.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like I wouldn't even put my music on my iPad. I always have my iPhone, and that has all my music. Whats even the point?

as CarboysDesire said, I think that it's better to be sure than sorry, even if I think that 32gb can be enough.

No amount of storage is ever really enough because something will come along to require more. I had a 30GB iPod about 4 years ago. I ditched it for the 8GB iPhone, which was a painful 16 months. But then I got the 32GB iPhone 3GS. However, it didn't hold near as many songs because iTunes bumped up the file size with iTunes Plus. I'm not saying i hate iTunes plus, but that stuff happens.

It wouldn't shock me for the iPhone to gain the capability of playing HD videos. It's not really important for it, but that could require more storage. The apps also keep growing in size as new capabilities are available.

Me, I'm probably going to get a 16GB iPad. I don't think I'll throw much music on it because I have an iPhone. I mostly think of it as a visual device, which would mean movies, ebooks, photos. I'd love to have a 64GB version, but that's $200 I could use on many other things.

FYI, I'm going to be an annoying copy editor and point out that iPads don't have HDs (hard disks). You guys can debate what to call them, but a hard disk drive is the spinny thing that most of us have in a computer. iPads have flash storage or an SSD. OK, rant over!

ok ok solid storage device lol

and when i said HD I was thinking Hard Drive... what is that?

Shoot, I can't even call it an "HD" anymore because I confuse myself with high definition. I'm a copy editor, so I get paid to be picky. Sometimes people like you get on the other end of my annoying "Um, excuse me, but you did this wrong ..." personality. Yeah, I need a hobby.

Was on the fence with this question. Survived on 16GB iPod Touch for how long now? But...

Was tired of managing media
Knew I would handbrake my DVDs on to better quality or iPad and therefore take up more space.
Knew I would expand the amount of media I carried becuase I wanted a good assortment of unwatched movies for both myself and my 7 year-old daughter, plus all the video I need for work, plus would carry thousands of pictures as a mobile portfolio and visual reference base, instead of just about 100 personal family photos.
Definitely knew I never wanted to worry about running out of room.

No brainer for me...
64GB

what are you ripping your dvds to using handbrake now? Ive been doing 700mbs for a few years for the ipods and it is still very watchable athough not amazing on my 15" computer. i figure these will work for an iPad and its not like I can go back and change em anyway.

I'm waiting on the 3G so I won't know exactly for a while and I'm not an expert. What I've read in the forums though is that you want your bitrate at least over 1500. The settings I've been using have it at 700-1000 and have been coming out in the 700MB to 1GB. Bumping it up to close around 2000 pushes the file size to around 2GB.

I dont' know if this will necessary or not, or even helpful. I'll test it out and see when the 3G finally gets here. I've ripped a couple movies at different rates to test when the time comes.

Also, I figure we're going to see a lot bigger apps soon. The periodic table one (XE) is close to 2GB. I also figure books will start becoming a lot more interactive with a lot more imbedded media.

Bottom line, I don't know how much space I'll need for the iPad, but it's almost a certainly the same amount of apps and media will take up a lot more room than on the iPhone/iPod Touch. I definitely want room to grow into it.

Darn! 2 gigs for the chem app?! Am I really gonna have to get the 64 gig ughhhhh

yes your handbrake help was useful, thanks!

do you know why over 1500 bitrate?

Like I said I'm not an expert, just picked up some tips from people who had tried and sounded like they knew what they were talking about. I will definitely try a few different options to maximize quality without needlessly increasing file size. However, I certainly want to take advantage of the gorgeous screen.

If you search the forum you should be able to find what I did. I included one thread below and a couple of posts from other threads I quickly searched.

I use handbrake w/ AppleTV preset but lower to 1800mbps. Works a charm for me.

I have been downloading a lot of m2ts files in 1080p format for my PS3 and Handbrake converts them very well down to the size I need for the iPad @ 1024x* using a bitrate of 2000kpbs on video and 160kpbs on audio. They look amazing I must say and I am very happy with the quality and file size turn out from these.
