does it affect web browsing ?

I'm planing to buy an iPhone very so i need to know these things

Recommend that you sit down with an AT&T rep and discuss options/plans.

Regarding the Data Plan, this is the plan that covers data transfers to and from your iPhone such as browsing the Internet or sending/receiving e-mail messages.

A data plan is what you monthly pay for:
  • Certain amount of calling minutes.
  • Certain amount of texts.
  • Certain amount of data/MBs.
And yes, it affects web browsing. Without a data plan you'll have no connection to the internet.. well, unless you're on Wi-Fi.

Uh, the Data Plan does not cover calling (talking) minutes.

OP, that is why you should contact your local AT&T/SoftBank/etc. office since they will have the correct information concerning what plans are available for you location.

It's something that AT&T forces you to get. No exceptions. Bwahaha.

I live in Canada so I need info about Fido and Rogers
also I looked at Fido's plan's they don't have a data plan is that a problem?

When you buy an iPhone and get service with AT&T, you will be required to get minutes (for talking on the phone), and data (accessing the network for any number of reasons, including visual voicemail, e-mail, many many many apps, Google, iTunes, YouTube, weather, web browsing, etc. Any time you do any of those things, you need a network connection. That can either be wifi or AT&T's data plan.).

You may decide to get a text plan, which will include MMS starting September 25th, but that is optional. Voice and data are not optional.

Oops, just saw you're in Canada. I know they do things differently up there (including having MMS since 3.0), but I'll defer to our Canadian posters to help you.

A normal plan does? But that also covers the data..
I believe that most cell companies that are supporting the iPhone bill based upon a combined data and calling plan, both of which can vary.

In addition, there may be options or other fees such as tax. An example option service might be a voice message service.

On a side note, definitely want to turn off roaming as it can be expensive. Just saw someone that had to pay a $3,000 plus phone bill at my local SoftBank store. Yikes!
