What is a Launcher?

I have been looking at all these launcher applications and to be honest I have no idea what they are or there purpose. Obviously they launch apps, I know that, but can some educate me in the art of launchers. Also, if any knows of one, can anyone direct me to a launcher that lets me create icons on my springboard that launches URLs? I know one must exist, just wondering if one exists that allows me to do this on my phone, if not, one that allows me to do this via computer, to which I can SSH over to my phone. Any info/help/launchers would be nice. Thanks!

Launchers allow you to launch applications without having them reside on your "desktop" at all times. For instance, I use Dock coupled with Customize. It allows me to access all of my applications by dragging from the lower right corner, but with only having a total of 11 applications on my "desktop." I like to have only the regularly used, most important functions visible at all times to reduce clutter.

I chose Dock because I find its solution cleaner than having multiple pages of applications.

Sweet. Yeah I had dock but found it a bit difficult to use with the case i have, its hard to get to the bottom right. Thanks for the explanation though. I guess Categories would be considered a launcher, seeing as I have over 20 games and all reside under one icon created using categories. Thanks again for the explanation.
