What is APPLE CORE?

HI guys...

i was looking to buy an APPLE TV...

so i started looking on craigslist...i found what looks to be a good one...

it was a 40 gig one....but it had apple core...installed in it..

the guy said it allows you to plug an external drive to it...

i was wondering if anyone knew of this and what exactly what is...?

i wanted to be sure before i bought it..
