My brother rips our blu-rays to mkvs on his pc,

i was thinking on putting them on my macbook and convert them with handbrake from 1280 x 720 at 4,000 kps to 848 x 480 around 2800 kbs

my question is it worth it, all the extra time, or would i be better ripping my dvds

someone told me that the compression to mkv, then to mp4 would loose quality, but would it still be better than ripping dvds, since there only 720 x 480, with anamorphic

Why would you want to convert them again, especially with lower resolution and bit-rate? Why not just leave them as mkv's and play them on your MacBook as-is?
