I’m wondering about differences between the old-24 (white) and new-24 (aluminum). Here is some data I know from comparing the specs:
• A new-24 has more power, in CPU speed (2.40 vs 2.16), bus speed (800 vs 667), a better GPU card & more video memory (256 vs 128). But either will have plenty of power for my uses.
• There are other changes -- the new has a bigger hard disk (320 vs 250), better RAM-upgrades (a 2 GB will produce 3.0 GB total with the new, but only 2.5 GB with the old since one of its 512s must be removed), and newer software with iLife (08 vs 06) -- but these differences are minor.
• The new costs $100 more when buying through my college, while they still have old models available, and they may be gone soon.
But I'm wondering about differences in old and new 24’s, re: HEATING PROBLEMS (what are the “bottom line facts” with old and new, for internal temperature of electronic & mechanical components like hard drives, etc) and SCREEN QUALITY (old-matte vs new-glossy has generated lots of strong opinions in other threads, but what about the overall quality of each screen? Do they use similar technologies? are they IPS or MVA or...?
Comments:
• I’m concerned about heating because I work in a room without air conditioning, where the temperature ranges from 75 F to 93 F (24 C to 34 C) with an average around 82 F (28 C). Will this higher external temperature have a big effect on the internal temperature of components, compared with working in a typical cooler room at around 70 F (21 C)?
• There is an interesting observation about the new-24 screen from an Apple forum, with the right side of the screen darker than the left, at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5166261
A less important factor is the KEYBOARD change (especially re: ease of typing and seeing the keys in dim lighting). It would be nice to just say “Apple knows what they’re doing” but I know better, having lived through their round mouse (was this the dumbest idea they ever had?) and keyboards from 2000-2001 (for G4 desktop and G3 laptop) with dark keys that are difficult to see in dim light. My school doesn’t yet have the new model, so I can’t just look at the old & new keyboards and decide. (people seem happy with the new keyboard in this thread, https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/342138/)
