Another dumbie question:

What is iLife 04? I got a retail box of it with a computer I bought recently.

I also got an iLife 05 coupon with my new iBook, can I upgrade the iLife -- but first what does it do? Do I also need Roxio Toast to burn DVDs on my superdrive?

Sorry, it's a dumbie.

ilife is the software suite, it has iphoto, garage band, imovie, itunes. Every year they update each one with new features

What is iLife '05 and why did I get a coupon for it with my 1.33 14" iBook this August when I purchased the machine new? (the iBook was loaded with Panther 10.3.7 and I did get a free box of Tiger with purchase).

Since I have the retail box of iLife 04, and apparently iLife 04 on my iBook, what good is the coupon for '05?

I can already buy it at the edu store new for 39 bucks.

And again, will 05 iLife make my UJ 835 and UJ 845 superdrives from Panasonic Matshitua burn better DVDs than iLife '04?

That's the real point of my question.

Wait a minute, would you rather pay $39 for the software or use the coupon for the free upgrade? Seems pretty obvious to me.

iLife 05 contains updated versions of all the software programs vs the 04 version. Specifically w/ regards to DVD burning, check out http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/ and see the new features. If you want to do more with burning of home movies, check out all that is new.

Do those coupons really work? I feel like they don't really apply to anything. Perhaps only to provide a way to get a free update such as the O/S update or iLife update if you purchased your Mac during a transition period.

I never understood those coupons. My wife just got a Mac Mini and it came with "iLife '05 Coupons" but it also came with iLife '05.

That said, if you got a new computer in August it should have iLife '05 preinstalled on it. Goto iPhoto (or any other iLife program other than iTunes) and goto About... what does it say the version is?

That's part of my dumbie question -- how do I use the coupon?

Well, since I have never had one of those coupons, I have no idea what is says. Most coupons have instructions like "take this to any retailer for xxx" or "go to this site to download yyy." If there are no instructions, then call Apple or whoever you bought the system from.

Call Apple about this. Any iBook purchased in August should have included iLife '05, as that came out in January. I'm a little surprised it didn't come preloaded with Tiger too, but at least you got a Tiger disc with it. If it didn't come with iLife '05 preinstalled as well as on the software restore discs as it should have, call Apple and let them know. I had a similar situation when I bought my Power Mac G5 in April, and Apple was very helpful and quick about sending me a copy of iLife '05.

Those aren't coupons, they're proof of purchase cards.

You are right -- it is iPhoto 5.035 or something. So I guess they are just proof of purchase coupons -- but to whom am I proving the purchase to?

I've never heard of those coupons being used for anything, but Apple continues to include them with their products. Maybe it's for some hypothetical future upgrade pricing scheme so that they can be used as proof of purchase for an upgrade. On the other hand, if that's true, why do they include 3 of them for each product?

Maybe they can be used if the original disk is broken and they need proof of purchase for replacement
