What is it Apple could possibly put in the redesigned iMac that will making anyone buying the 2019 iMac today have buyers remorse?

To me, most of the stuff in the iMac Pro would eventually trickle down to the iMac. I would expect a slightly updated iMac Pro at WWDC along with the Mac Pro reveal. I don't see any big update or redesign to the iMac until at least 2020.

I honestly just came back from the apple store, i was planning to buy the 27 inch $2299 model with the upgraded 9th gen i5 and 8gb Radeon 580 but i left the store without the iMac, i am still using my 2011 27 inch iMac which is running just fine and i wanted to upgrade the iMac just for the sake of upgrading but id be pretty pissed if the new redesigned iMac that is rumored to come out next year has some sort of a 120hz Refresh rate screen that far outshines the current display of the iMac, How likely is that?

As they just updated the iMac. I can't see them doing anything anytime soon. I would expect the next gen iMac to have the upcoming AMD Navi GPU (7nm) and another 14nm+++++++++++++++++++++++++ Intel CPU refresh. So a moderate GPU update in higher end iMacs and a miniscule CPU update. As 10nm desktop CPU may not hit until 2021 and knowing Apple. They may not show up in an iMac until 2022.

The big shocker would be if in 2020 Apple either replaces the Intel CPU with a monster 8/16 Core 65W ARM CPU made by Apple and based off their next gen iOS CPU. Which I assume would be an A13/14x. Another option would be if Apple finally used an AMD CPU. Putting in a 7nm Ryzen 3000 8/12/16 core in the iMac and monster 32/64 core AMD Threadripper/Epyc in the iMac Pro and Mac Pro. Either may give some buyers remorse. There are some rumours of ARM. AMD is just a pipe dream. One can always hope someone at Apple has the "courage" to buck Intel for AMD. By the time Intel finally hits 10nm in the desktop. AMD could be at 5nm or 3nm.

As there is unlikely to be anything for another year. There isn't much reason to wait. If this is a work computer. Just sell it if the new iMac is compelling enough. Whatever depreciation for the year should be offset by the value of the work it performed.

See Mac mini. Better cooling, all-SSD, T2/T3 chip, and then maybe Face ID, HDR, ProMotion Display with up to 120 Hz.

Very. The display is the single most important feature of the iMac. Added workspace in the form of a 31-inch HDR display would cause me to say "I have to get this." Maybe they'll add stuff like Face ID, but that won't cause people to lust after it. It was the same in 2014. When they added 5k resolution to the iMac it was a no-brainer purchase for me. If it's for work you look at that thing the entire day. Apple knows this so I would think it's the iMac team's #1 priority right now.

"What is it Apple could possibly put in the upcoming redesigned iMac?"

- t2 chip (or perhaps a t3)
- iMac Pro cooling system
- but then, no user-replaceable RAM (because of new cooling)
- improved display panel
- LARGER display panel
- height-adjustable stand (not likely)

I have a Mid-2011 iMac with i7 chip that's running okay. I'm looking at updating to virtually the very same 2019 iMac configuration that Benz was: $2299 top 27-inch version with the 9th generation i5, the 8gb Radeon Pro 580 and a 1tb SSD. I would put 32gb of RAM in it - either by Apple or myself. Even without the i9 and the Vega GPU, the computer comes to over $3K. That's not the kind of money I can easily throw around but I am prepared to spend every 8 years or so.

I am not worried about new features being introduced on the next iMac because the iMac I have configured would no doubt be a solid performer for quite a number of years. But I am concerned about Apple switching to its own CPUs - rendering my 2019 iMac obsolete after 2 or 3 years. I can envision Apple making the switch and then cheerfully informing me that my computer will no be able to run the next version of OS or whatever OS/iOS hybrid they may come up with.

So... I'm just sitting here, trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on a 2019 iMac or wait another year - or two. And if it's two years, I might not get any security updates for High Sierra in the final 12 months. And that's assuming my Mid-2011 iMac will continue to work fine.

What any of you do?

What any of you do?

I’m going to hold off, I really wanted to get the new iMac but I’d be pretty damn pissed if the redesigned iMac has a “ProMotion” display with 120hz refresh rate. The whole thing with the iMac is the screen and if that gets updated next I’d feel pretty ripped off if I pay 2500$ for a machine that is obsolete in terms of its display tech which is currently at 60hz), they’re trying to push the “5k” word too much in the Apple store but I know better than that. There’s more to the display other than the number of pixels and Apple knows it too. I love how they use the “1 billion colors” wording lol, who are they trying to fool? It’s the same damn display tech with 60hz refresh rate

I was surprised at the total lack of change. Not even more USB-C ports. I’d have put money on a 4 Type-C and 2 Type-A flip on 2019 models.

Was going to buy an updated iMac for the ease of an All-In-One but the cost of a new model, compared to more RAM and an SSD on the desktop was a no brainer.

For a redesign, smaller bezels, change the ports, maybe a T2 (and as such, base model SSD).

Yeah, Apple's continued efforts to ram Fusion drives down our throats or make us pay big for SSD's that aren't that expensive in the aftermarket is really beginning to irritate me. I know. They're "optimized." And, of course, other than adding RAM, the latest iMac's are more difficult to service and upgrade than ever before. This is exactly why I can envision Apple changing the CPU's and rendering all earlier Macs instantly obsolete. I don't know that they will do this - but given the way the company operates, I think it's definitely possible. So I'll hang onto my old iMac for now. If it dies in the next year, maybe I'll just buy a - *GASP* - Windows desktop with just as much power for half the price.

You guys keep playing the waiting game, you will end up having the same conversation 5 years from now.

Your ideology is fundamentally flawed. The iMac is due for a massive redesign which is why some of us are holding off on upgrading right now. the 2019 iMac got the same display 60hz technology from 2012 and exact same overall design. the redesigned iMac will have a 120hz ProMotion display that will make any prior iMac seem drastically inferior just because of how important the display technology itself is important on the iMac as a whole.

Is there actual truth to the iMac having a redesign? There’s been rumors for a while of the iMac being redesigned. Since the last time there was one, was in 2012. So to me it’s I’ll believe it when I see it.

I’ve been needing a new computer for while. Using just a iPhone and iPad for everything is getting pretty tedious.

I just don’t think people should continue to wait, only to be disappointed.

Is there actual truth to the iMac having a redesign? It's got to happen sooner or later unless apple decides to discontinue the iMac which i doubt will happen. Many of us thought the redesign was going to be here this time around but as we all know by now thats not the case as the 2019 iMac is the same old design. Its not rocket science either, 120hz screens are far superior to 60hz displays and the screen of the iMac will greatly benefit from such an update to it's display.

I am extremely tempted to buy the 2019 iMac just for the sake of upgrading my mid 2011 iMac, heck i nearly walked out with a 2019 imac from the apple store yesterday but i have a feeling a drastic design upgrading is coming in the form of updating display technology for the iMac,

The motion smoothness of a 120hz display is FAR superior to that of a 60hz display therefore the wait might be worth it.

My fear is Apple didn’t update the iMac all of 2018. It doesn’t make me too confident they will even have another update anytime soon, and the 2019 iMacs will be the latest version for a long time.

Just curious but what is the real world benefit (specific use) of 120hz?

Far smoother motion and responsiveness

What is ProMotion?
Apple describes it as such:

A new [display] technology that delivers refresh rates of up to 120Hz for fluid scrolling, greater responsiveness and smoother motion content. With ProMotion, Apple Pencil is even more responsive with an industry-best, 20-millisecond latency for even more fluid and natural drawing. ProMotion also improves display quality and reduces power consumption by automatically adjusting the display refresh rate to match the movement of the content.

I have a late '12 27" iMac, and a lot of things that I want are available now, like the Retina display, faster CPU and graphics, all-SSD storage etc... I guess I don't really care too much about having it be even thinner than it already is, or having slimmer bezels even.

But the *one* thing that would make me want to upgrade more than anything is a larger screen. But it would also still have to have user-upgradeable RAM.

But...for gaming mostly? I just keep seeing articles that say most people and especially non-gamers probably won’t notice.

No, it will benefit every single thing you do on the iMac, it will be a complete game changer just like the switch that happened when HDTVs went from 60hz to 120hz technology, the motion performance is HIGHLY superior and the motion detail of everything is crystal clear compared to a 60hz display so whether it’s a YouTube video you’re viewing or a game your playing, Anything will look far superior on a 120hz display. Especially one made by apple. That’s why I’m gonna wait for a redesign with the new display tech as opposed to buying into the same old 60hz display that is present in the 2019 iMac. It’s way too dated

I have to say that, as a guy who has been in the broadcast TV industry for quite a long time, that I personally don't like screens with 120hz refresh rates. I'm only speaking about my own personal preference here. Technically, you're right. But 120hz screens make everything look like it's on videotape rather than, say, film. Others in the industry used to call it the "soap opera effect" -- as in everything looks like the daytime TV soap opera dramas that were all live in the early days of TV and then videotaped later on. By contrast, most prime-time programming was on film - just like cinema. Today, almost everything is natively digital - but producers and directors go out of their way to make it look like film. Personally, I just want to make sure my iMac will remain current if Apple goes to its own processors.

Motion will be better no matter what you view, whether it’s scrolling through a webpage on safari or whatever it may be. And you are confusing 120hz display technology with the Motion interpolation tech that a lot of hdtvs incorporate which are the SOLE cause for the “soap opera” effect you’re describing, soap opera effect that that feature causes has nothing to do with the refresh rate of 120hz of the display itself . It has to do with the motion interpolation tech that these HDTV’s have often calling “AutoMotionPlus” etc which basically inserts a black dot in between frames to create a very smooth viewing experience artificially that some people tend to like and some people tend to hate hence why most people turn that feature off entirely.

If you wait for technology, you’ll always be waiting. There’s always a better update on the horizon. That’s how technology works. If you need a new iMac now, buy it now and use it. Your computer will still be top of the line even with a better one out. You don’t even know if the next Mac will be a redesign or even have 120 ha refresh rates.

Inferior how? As an example, I use my older iPad Pro (without 120Hz) very productively. And although I will upgrade eventually, there is no real world advantage with regard to going to 120Hz. It’s a nice to have. Same with this. It is in no way as important to how we use our computers as you seem to be pitching.

If there are people who want to wait for the new hotness, go for it. In the past, I’ve waited for form factor changes myself. But, there’s no reason to use misleading pronouncements to discourage anyone from upgrading now.
