I'm moving in a couple of months to an area that AT&T has ZERO data coverage. Not even edge. When I went TDY there others in my squadron with Sprint and Verizon had 3G coverage and I couldn't even check my email. TMobile is pretty weak there too so unlocking is out.

Question is, I am going to switch carriers to Sprint or Verizon what is the second best phone out there. I'm looking for the closest experience to an iphone's interface.

Sprint is cheaper service I believe. If you are going to Sprint, the Pre is really the best phone. If you go to Verizon, the Droid or Pre Plus would both be good bets.

You have to tell us more:

1) What if any apps are important to you? (For example, many iPHone apps are or have been ported to Android. Others, like maps or nav, have been on other smartphones for years.)

2) What do you like about the UI most? Or rather, what don't you like and you wish you had? Like active homescreens, etc. Were you jailbroken ?

3) Do you travel, and still want world GSM capability? That indicates a world phone.

4) What kind of plan do you usually have?

If you have only Verizon and Sprint to choose, then I'd say go with Palm Pre on Sprint.

Exactly the opposite, your best off with a motorola droid or Eris, the droid is actually a lot better than the current iphone, hopefully that will change with refresh.

And if you are not going to a different network until late March, I'd get the Nexus One on Verizon. At the time, it would probably be the best phone/network combo.

thanks for the suggestions, i've used the Motorola Droid a little and like it but is it worth the monthly premium over a Pre and Sprint, thats really the question.

Any experience with the Hero, Pro Touch2, or Instinct HD?

I do not think you will go wrong with the Pre. it is a great phone.
