What is SSH?

I order to gain access to the files on my iPhone I need to SSH it correct? (so that I can modify summerboard themes and such)

What is SSH and how do I do it?

In summerboard, I can mix and match parts of different themes right? (i.e. icons from one, background from another, and dock from another)

Sorry I am an iPhone newbie. (Don't even have it yet, but I want to know as much as I can before it arrives)

So what do I use to gain access to the summerboard files?

Most jailbreak programs have an option to auto install SSH for you. Once you do, if you're on a Mac just open up Terminal and type "ssh root@<insert iphone IP here".

If you're on Windows you'll need a seperate SSH client but those are usually free.

Like TEG said, it's just a secure way to connect into your iPhone where you can browse the file structure and transfer files back and forth.

SSH is a secure way to login to your phone and access the file system. It's done over the terminal. You'll need a program called OpenSSH on your phone. I'm assuming your using a pc as per your signature so download Putty on your computer.


when putty opens it'll prompt you for the ip of your phone on your network. (assuming its on your wireless)
once you connect to it login as root and password is alpine.
then you can use linux commands to navigate:
cd (change directory)
ls (list everything in the directory)
mv (use to move files)
cp (copy)

I cant really help you with the summerboard themes sorry but hopefully someone else can chime in for that. Once you are in as root, be careful! Theres alot you can do that'll damage and/or brick your phone. Oh, and google is your friend!

SSH is built into OS X just 'man ssh' to learn more about it in the terminal. For Windows, I suggest using PuTTY for your SSH connection.

Ok, so I wasn't wrong.

Where do I get putty, and how do I know my iPhones IP?

I have watched a couple of videos on how to change summerboard themes, so I should be ok that way.

I am on a PC BTW.

go there^^^ for putty.

and to find your ip, go to settings/wi-fi/ and then tap the blue > and then your ip should be listed.

Ok, I think that I have it figured out now, but most people that I see use WinSCP is Putty better? I have also heard about iPhonebrowser, and you do not have to deal with passwords and stuff.

I hate to split hairs, but SSH doesn't "support UNIX commands" - the shell executes the commands it receives from you via SSH. (I suppose SSH would be a packet-based binary protocol which provides encrypted client/server connections)

Also, it isn't built into Mac OS X - it just comes pre-packaged with it.

I have been reading the ssh things to do for pc and most of the say that when you install openssh from installer that the icon should be there and i installed it but there is no icon is that a problem????
