Hey guys,

I've been looking around the internet looking for some definitive answers regarding the actual clock-speed of the 8600m GT in the Santa Rosa Macbook Pro.

I've seen numbers on old threads here that range from 375mhz Core to 470mhz Core and people who say it upclocks from 375mhz standard to 470mhz when it needs to, but I couldn't get my MBP to replicate this in Windows even when running the video stress test on CS:Source.

I've looked at the barefeats numbers and they show results for both 470mhz and 375mhz, I couldn't figure out if they had upped the clockspeed to 470mhz from 375mhz, or if it was an automatic thing when more graphical 'oomph' was needed.

All help is appreciated,

Thanks

Richard

PS: This is intended for the 15" Macbook Pro, since that's the one I own and am interested in :)

I can tell you that the 15" MBP has a lower GPU clock speed than the 17" (bad Apple). Of course, had I known this, I would have gotten the 17", but my 15" does the job just fine. There was a thread around here that said it somewhere, I'll try to find it.

EDIT: I found it, this post is what you want.
Well, the 17" are actually OVERCLOCKED, not just clocked different.

The memory speeds Nvidia mentions for the 8600GT are 700MHz, the 2.4GHz 15.4" runs them at 635MHz and the 17" at 650MHz.

The GPU core are supposed to run at 475MHz, the 2.4GHz 15.4" runs it at 470MHz and the 17" at 520MHz.

I guess it's easier to get of some excessheat in the 17" case design, not that weird ...

Still the same GPU thought, and I guess since Apple uses GDDR3 instead of 2 like some other manufacturers maybe they can clock higher? And in the end if you want to risk your machine totally you can overclock it yourself ..

Thanks!

I was having a minor panic earlier about not being able to play GH3 on my 3~ month old computer! But if the core of the 8600m GT is @ 470mhz then I surpass their minimum which is the NVidia 7600 which runs at only 400mhz.

I'm certain its far more complex than just core/memory speed and memory amount, but at least I'm pretty sure I'm good to go on that front, hopefully

Thanks

Richard
