When Apple products are returned or recycled through Apple they are rigorously checked for lint. These very small amounts of lint that they find (usually in the ports and charging ports) are then sent directly to Tim Cook who washes them in the tears of Apple employees.

Over the years the pile got quite large and it was decided that the lint would be spun to create these cloths, in order to ensure enough lint to continue manufacture of the cloths Cook ordered more ports on larger Apple devices.
