what are your experiences with a docking station? Are you using a caldigit, owc or other?

some people claim the caldigit will run hot?

I’m still waiting on delivery for my M1 MBP 16GB/2TB, and have already purchased the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro. I’ve currently got a (dying) 2015 MBP 16GB/2TB and have been using an OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock for roughly 3 years or so. Up until about a month ago, everything worked fine but now half of the dock doesn’t work. The audio out and 3 USB ports on the back stopped working. It’s not running hot, either, so I’m not sure. I have managed to get about 3½ years out of it, though. I’m hoping to get that long or more out of the Belkin Dock.

I mainly keep my laptop in clamshell mode as our home media server now. Basic web use and stuff, but occasionally I’ll record with Logic Pro and do some light work in FCP. I tend to keep a LOT of extra drives connected for backups and storage. I use Channels for the TV&DVR in the house. I use my laptop (closed lid) while I’m working, too. It’s mainly a desktop computer, is what I’m getting at. And I’ve looked into lots of docks before, and found the Belkin above to get a lot more good reviews. Plus it’s got the ports I need. I also plan on connecting an Aukey 10 port USB hub, too. ?

I’ll be connecting all of my Time Machine drives to the Aukey 10 Port hub, along with a USB eLicenser and my Logitech webcam. Those being the things I’m not worried about having slower I/O speeds. Even though I’ll still see a bit of an improvement from what I’m seeing on the 2015 MBP.

the Belkin Dock will have my main Media Server Drive, my Channels/DVR Drive, one Thunderbolt Time Machine drive, my Dell monitor (via DisplayPort), my Logitech 2.1 Speakers, wired Ethernet, and then a lightning port cable when I need to plug in my iPhone.

Whelp, apparently the Aukey 10 port hub doesn’t like the USB type A to USB-C Cable. Needs to be just USB 3.1 to same. Oh well. Need to look into that more or get a new hub.
