I would like to make a basic webpage with a few pictures, some text and links to promote a home business and post my online portfolio.

I am not a computer expert and I'm not interested in learning to use coding (HTML, for example). What is the best simple and easy-to-understand program for Mac OS X for creating a simple website? I do not have a budget currently to hire an expert, and I would like to learn to do a simple webpage on my own.

Thanks for your help.

iWeb. It's easy to use and it came with your Mac, so it's free. It's probably been sitting in your Applications folder since the day you bought your computer, just waiting to be opened. You can learn more about it on Apple's site, here.

Note: It'll work even easier if you get a MobileMe account.

I have a iBook G4 with Mac OS X version 10.4.11. I looked in my Applications folder and did a search and did not find iWeb.

Should my computer have it, is there somewhere I can download it for free or should I buy it?

thanks,

YMG

Do you have iLife installed? If so, which version? iWeb was introduced in iLife '08.

Ahh, so you're using an older model, which is probably the reason why it's not there.

You see, iWeb is part of a suite of software Apple calls "iLife", which also includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and GarageBand. iLife is usually updated once at the beginning of each year. A couple years ago, iWeb was a new program and was officially added to the iLife suite; I'm assuming you probably never updated to a newer version.

So to get a newer version of iLife, you'll probably have to purchase one. Apple *just* released the newest version (iLife '09), however, it's not in stores yet. When it is, you'll be able to get it from Apple or any Apple authorized reseller (Apple sells it for $79). But also note that, as you're running on an older computer, make sure it'll meet the system requirements.

If it doesn't, you may want to look online to purchase an older version of the suite (such as iLife '08, or iLife '06). But just note that iWeb is, hands down, the EASIEST way to create and customize a website -- no special HTML coding knowledge needed.

How do I get ILife?

I got my computer in '05. The only thing I could find on my hard drive is "ILife Media Browser." Is this it? Or is there somewhere I can download ILife?

Thanks for your help,

I got my computer in '05...

Yeah, iWeb wasn't included in the iLife suite until iLife '06. :(

You'll have to purchase iLife to get the software. As I mentioned above, if you computer doesn't meet the system requirements for the new version (iLife '09), you may want to look online for an older version -- such as iLife '08 or iLife '06.

You may be able to find those previous versions cheaper on Amazon.com.
