I currently have Google Drive, using Mac OS Sierra and was wondering what the best or safest way to upload a Carbon Copy Clone of my hard drive is. I currently have used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of my hard drive, which resulted in the creation of this folder on my external hard drive. Then, I used Apple's Disk Utility application to make a .dmg file, as well as using 7zip to create a compressed .7z file (both methods on same folder just to be safe). I uploaded both to the web. I am wondering if compression or using .dmg would ruin the Carbon Copy Clone, which resides in a folder in my hard drive.

In other words, if in the future I want to boot from the Clone Folder, would it be possible for me to uncompress the .7z file and/or open the .dmg file and be able to boot from it after placing the extracted folder onto a hard drive? Would the .dmg-ing or compressing (.7z) of the Carbon Copy Clone Folder ruin anything? Thanks.

My guess is that it won't work, especially with a bootable backup. The best way to answer your question is to test it. Create a backup and store it on Google Drive. Then download it to an external drive and try booting from it.

You'll have a better chance of success, I think, if you clone to a disk image file to begin with. You could then zip that and upload it.

You'll have to do this entire process every time you want to update it, also.
